Evo MR write up in Road & Track
Saying that you can "mod your current Evo and have a car faster than an MR" is typical tuner mentality..Yes, you may improve on the factory setup but you have to start somewhere with the "core" settings and technology that
gives you!!
That being said, think about what you can do with a stock MR!!!
I left my Evo bone stock because I don't have the time to dink around with aftermarket this and that..
The brainflash I have recently considered(against my better judgement)
But being able to buy something right out of the box like the EVo and now the new MR is the appeal for me..

Its the typical tuner mentality when it's a different/inferior engine. The MR is the exact same engine, just with better stuff stock. The only thing that is very hard to upgrade to on the current Evo is the MR's transmission. What I was saying earlier in this thread is that most people that mod the MR will end up changing out the turbo, the suspensions, and everything else Mitsu upgraded anyway. The only thing left that would be different than the current Evo stock would be the roof and the tranny.
Dont get me wrong, I melt when i see the MR but realistically I cant justify selling my current evo in the low 20s and starting off brand new again with a 33K + transaction. If it comes in at the end of 2005 though, I might consider it since I would have my Evo for almost 3 years by then.

Weak clutch evidence continues to increase.
Did anyone read the article comparing the EVO 8 to the off road motorcycle? The EVO 8 won 3 out of 5 events I think, but they called it a draw because the EVO 8 clutch went out at the end and was unable to drive home under its own power. Launching on dirt should have been much easier on the clutch due to the reduced traction... Sport Compact Car has also been attributing decreasing performance in their EVO 8 to a failing clutch. It seems that changing the clutch is pretty involved and not for the inexperienced. This reliability issue has been one of the main reasons I've been keeping my RSX TypeS and waiting to see what the next generation brings from Subaru and Mitsubishi. The MR is very attractive but I haven't seen any mention of the MR having an upgraded clutch. I'm tempted by a used STI; you can find them on cars.com with low miles for less than a new EVO and I feel in general Subaru is more reliable than Mitsubishi.

Clutch issues or detonation...Link
Hmmm..
Tough call..
NOT!! Besides... wouldn't you expect a car with almost HALF the Horespower and HALF the torque HALF the moving parts and HALF the performance to be a tad more reliable than the EVO..? (RSX vs. EVO)
Any car with as much performance as the EVO may have a weak link somewhere...I appreciate the RSX but c'mon..
as far as the Subaru I'd still take a replaced clutch for $500 plus labor than a blown motor and gold painted alloys...MY opinion mind you..
Different stroke for different folk..
Subaru STI is more reliable than EVO, funny. My best friend has an STi and i dont wont say a word. Nothing beside ping Ping and weird issues and over all no real after market parts. Anyways I love the MR but all i need is that 6 speed tranny since i am about to put Works turbo kit in my EVO. I found many 6 speed trany in japan for the EVO that go for realy low price. I believe that it would fit perfectly insted of our 5 speed so no problem here.
I agree with both of you, Az3ar and M3lachsilber, that detonation is a much more serious issue than early clutch failure. That's why I mentioned that I'm waiting for the next generation from both Subaru and Mitsubishi. I was thinking about the STI detonation issue when I wrote that. I just meant that a low mileage STI seems tempting for the price of an EVO 8 because of the higher performance, on paper, for the price. The EVO has also not been entirely free of detonation issues. Vishnu tuning mentions on their web site that detonation is an issue on some stock EVOs as well. I don't expect either of these cars to be as reliable as my RSX but I do expect them to go through the warranty period without any major issues and to have the companies stand by their warranty. I love the EVO and it would be a no brainer for me but I don't want to be thinking about the added cost/hassle of replacing the stock clutch before even buying the car. Besides the stock clutch would not be replaced by a $500 clutch but by at least a twin disk unit >$1500. Returning to topic, has anyone heard if the MR will have an upgraded clutch? I wish Mitsubishi would install a twin disk carbon unit from the factory. I don't care if I would have to pay for it.

. since we all know that
factory warranty is worth just about the same as toilet paper i really don't think that this should even be taken under consideration. i do agree about the MR coming with some better stuff stock but to me, the added money to get the MR and the money i will lose on mine is just not worth it.
I dont think they will upgrade the clutch. However, you dont need the carbon clutch because its made more for real rally racing. It takes for ever to warm up so you will have clutch shatter all morning and it wares out faster. but you need the twin clutch for sure.
that is just too funny . since we all know that factory warranty is worth just about the same as toilet paper i really don't think that this should even be taken under consideration.
.. And warranty and NO warranty are two different things...
You either got one or you don't..
It's like saying point blank range shot with or without a kevlar vest..
Which one would YOU pick??!!It's better to have the pretection than not at all.
I would rather have something in between me and the dealer regardless..
And I for one think that I have been taken care of well..I mean sheesh, they replaced my freakin BRAKES under warranty..

for that matter. the way i look at it, if you plan on buying a car and leaving it stock than the MR is for you. if you plan on modding, than just buy the regular evo and mod away. i am pretty sure that for the people who moddded their cars and lost their warrenty, the MR will make no sense at all. do you think that the dealer will give them a new 6spd tranny if there is a problem? a limited car means more expensive parts which in this case means higher chance of warrent denial.
