I would say out of the box the 2.5 STI will still have more lowend grunt and be alittle quicker. It is only 5hp more but who knows maybe it is 5hp more with very modest numbers but i doubt it since every model goes up 5hp. I would like to know where they get the extra 5hp.

The 05 MRs 6 speed eclipses the STis top speed dramatically. Though, stock I think the speed limiters are the same.

According to MotorTrend's Top SPeed Shootout, the 03 EVO will 157mph. The STi wasn't even invited to the shootout as it does like 140 or 145mph.

If they both had enough power to reach mechanical limit max speed, both at their current stock max rpms ( 7000 rpm ), with stock tires, the Evo MR would run 195mph, the STi 176mph. The STi's 1st 4 gears are just way too close. then it drops quite a lot to 5th.
The graph shows a lot of the STi's 6spd MTs quirks.

Dont know about the Mr but the STi tops around 140 or so, though in different temps, and outside varations it does change a mile or two.

Watch the 5/30 Top Gear episode... the '05 MR FQ-320 spanks the STI WR1 by a TON. They called it an understeering pig. The "stig" said that the STI is a good boy's car, but the MR is a "man's" car.

The MR's laptime was like 1:26.0 (Lambo's Gullardo sp? was 1:25.8)

The STI's laptime was 1:29.4, I think. Not even faster than last year's FQ-300. (1:28.x something)

It's a good episode.

Yeah, Fireball I saw that video. The MR blew away the new WR1.

The MR has 293 bhp and the STi has 300 bhp but the STi's 6 speed manual transmission has a shorter ratio compared to the MR's 6 speed manual transmission. This gives the MR a 0-60 time of 4.7 seconds compared to the STi's 0-60 time of 4.9 seconds. The RS can get 0-60 in 4.4 seconds! In all the magazines I have looked at (Road and Track, Car and Driver, Motor Trend, etc.) they compared the STi to the regular Evo and the regular Evo always won. Mostly because of value (The Evo is around 28K while the STi is around 31K).

A regular evo 8 will always win on the track (where it counts). The MR will dominate it

Really? Do you have a link? I didn't know the MR has that much power. I think the MR will be slower in a drag, but much faster in a road course. Just like the vanilla EVO (except the much part) .

Honestly, why does it matter? These cars are so close, it will be more dependant on DRIVER rather than the car....

I got the inaugural issue of SPEED which has a huge road test on the MR. I seem to have lost it though but I do remember that it got a huge .98g on the skidpad and has 291 pd.-ft. of torque.
