And how likely is it that Subaru would *reduce* the power of the STi for 2005? The 25 lbs added for 2005 aren't likely to make it "a good bit slower."

I'm glad to see the MR turn out such great numbers, buf the figures for the STi seem a bit odd. I was just hoping for an accurate comparison, and this sounds like at least one of the cars wasn't quite typical.

Drivetrain components have changed in the STi (ACY, front helical diff). Could be a greater loss due to friction, who knows. Wider (possibly heavier) wheels. Subaru also reflashed the ECU to avoid cylinder detonation, which has been a problem on previous STi's. Could have reduced the power slightly. There are a number of things that could have affected the power.

Besides, there are always cars in the group that are more powerful/less powerful than the norm for a given make and model.

The boost probably tapers down like the '03-'04 did. The peak boost is not occuring at peak HP.

How much do you think those would go for?

according to the article the 05 STi's all have a reflashed ecu to remove timing from the curve and reduce pinging. That will greatly reduce hp output and cause the 05 to feel less powerful than a non-flashed 04. I would say that the 300hp rating for the subaru is not true since the reflash. You'd be surprised at the difference that 5 degrees of timing can make...

Is this the same red as '03/'04 models? Looks darker.

USDM

Non-USDM

For 4-6 grand more I expect something better than a cheapo sticker.

Now we're going to worry about the badges.

Seriously, it really doesn't look that much better. It isn't a sticker, the JDM Evolution part is the same as ours. Take it off, paint it a dark color and put it back on in front of the MR Edition part. You're more than half way there. I think this whole JDM spec thing is beyond an obsession at this point.

No surprise on MT picking the Evo. They love the car and would probably pick it even if it didn't win any of the performance specs just because the seats are so awesome.

Really, then you seriously don't know our staff. We're probably 50/50 between the two cars and we've gotten to experience both for the last year on our long-term fleet, so we've had plenty of seat time in each.

Please don't make general statements like this when you know none of us personally.

Getting the '05 MR down to the '04 RS's weight is trivial.
Motor Trend weighs each vehicle tested at the office on scales we own with a full tank of fuel, sans driver. Those weights are NOT comparable to what the manufacturer lists, which is why we weigh them ourselves. Each manufacturer weighs their own vehicles but with different standards, some with fluids some without, etc.
