Apexi...first contact
Apexi...first contact
Hey everybody,
Just got my new Apexi Power FC today, gonna plug it in tonight to my Evo7 GSR running 95 unleaded. Is there anything I need to watch for? anything I should know about?? I know to switch off the boost controller option and to watch for knocking.
Please any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
John

Apexi in, running sweet.
First of all I found that it took longer for the idle to set itself than I expected but eventually sorted itself out.
For anyone thinking about an Apexi FC then you, like me will not believe how good the software is, the commander unit is so easy to use and the functionality is brilliant and fun. You can monitor 1, 2, 4 or 8 of the parameters at a time with peak hold for each of them. Everything can be viewed and/or changed using only 6 buttons on the controller.
My first few runs gathered some serious knock so I went and got some octane booster. This helped alot and the car definately seems to be pulling stronger but still cant pull fifth as the knock goes through the roof, 103 as soon as I floor it in fifth when changing from 4th at around 7400rpm. It doesnt go above 40 in 4th and 10-12 in 1st, 2nd or 3rd.
I noticed then that the inj duty was reaching 100% in fifth gear and infact its reaching 100% towards the end of 3rd and 4th. Surely this is causing my knocking as the injectors cant supply enough fuel or am I talkin thru my rear? I mean I know the fuel Im using is a far cry from the 100 octane racing fuel that this brain is set up for so its possible that the blame still lays there.
Does this mean I dont have the fuel pressure or are the injectors are too small( both standard)? also at high revs the timing goes all the way back to 10 degrees, is this correct or is the Apexi automatically pulling back to save the engine?
Can anyone advise me on what to do next?
I will need and appreciate all the help I can get!
Thank you,
John.

Thanks guys,
I've learned since that I need a boost controller and infact I dont even have a boost gauge so I dont know what the boost is doing. I was under the impression that I could monitor the boost on the commander but thats not possible without the optional boost control kit.
I have a little TO-DO list consisting roughly of the following:
1) MBC (possibly Hallmans pro)
2) Boost gauge
3) Walbro 255l fuel pump
So its adios from me till I get these bits rounded up.
In the mean time Keep Those Revs Up!
Thanks for your help,
John.

the power fc has a boost gauge function that monitors (and graphs) boost pressures. I noticed upping the octane always helps reduce knock. if you have an aggressive tune that is for higher octane numbers, just putting street gas is not going to yield positive results. glad to see someone else using this remarkable piece of equipment.

Hello again,
Can anyone tell me is it possible to have the PFC control the boost on my car without the optional boost control kit because as described on the Apexi-usa.com website, the boost control kit is only needed for non-factory turbo-charged vehicles. Does this require a little rewiring? Can anyone shed some light please?
I currently have no other means of boost control on the car besides the standard solenoid. When I switch the boost control function on in the etc->functions menu the engine light comes on and when its set to off there is no boost reading on monitor mode.
Help!

I didnt even know the PFC used the stock solenoid for boost. I figured it would deactivate it and run WG pressure. That's why I have an external boost controller. I can't wait to get mine installed. Does the D-Jetro come with a base map? I'm so tempted to install it now and play around with it.
About you hitting such high knock levels, how about just lowering the timing a bit since you cant add more fuel.

There is a great feature in settings area where you can make temporary timing adjustments across the entire map. You can use it for tuning to find your optimum timing. I also use it when I go to the track to add timing for race gas.
Do you think it's safe for me to install the PowerFC on my Evo now with the base map while I wait for tuning? I wanted to have it tuned after I put the new turbo in. Should I dial out some timing if I run it on the base map?

My base map was very conservative. I don't think it ever went over 5 on knock. It will flash the check engine light (flashes very quickly for knock) if you get over 60 on knock count, so you would know if there was a problem.
