timing=good in gears 1-3, knocks in 5th in same load cell -- now what?

I'm finding that when I'm in higher gears, that the earlier RPM spoolup of the higher gears is causing knock at heavy throttle around the low 3000 rpm range. Whether I'm in 5th or 2nd gear, the car is in the 10% load cell so I can't have two different timing values based on gear. What's the best solution to this? Should I just make a point not to apply high throttle in 5th in low RPM ranges, or should I tune for 5th gear and sacrifice torque in the lower gears? I'm not sure what the usual approach is. Right now I've got my peak MAF at 2100 and I'm in the low-1900s at 21 psi. I was hoping to tune for pump into the 22-23 psi range eventually, so I really don't want to lower my MAF max, which I suppose could bump the 5th gear low RPM stuff into the 20% range under heavy throttle.

Sorry for the rambling. If anyone has any thoughts, I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks.

p.s. Here's a recent logfile for what it's worth. I've got the AFR about where I want it, so now I'm gradually stepping up timing.

to bad you dont have an ebc that can control boost in different gears.. like the avc-r.. you could decrease the duty cycles in the higher gears to preven boost from coming on so rapidly.

wow, dude, your driving an EVO. You just dont go full throttle in fifth at low RPM's. Its instant knock. If you want to lug it, get a v-8 or a diesel. What you are doing is a big NO NO!!!

That would be nice.

Trust me, I don't drive that way usually. I generally don't go WOT until I'm at 3000 rpm, except when I'm tuning. I just want my car to be safe for anyone to drive. Maybe what I should do is just have a really conservative map on one of my 5 settings and that will be the setting that I use whenever my wife drives the car, etc.

Its probably the transition between closed loop and open loop.. look at your injector duty cycles and see if it jumps in that range, if it does, adjust the fuel a little bit so its not as big a jump.. Once you look there, look at your timing on the transition. Also run slightly lower boost if you have control of your boost map in the 10%-30% load sites at lower RPM.. It will help..

Ill bet it is pretty simple... I noticed this kinda (Not to your level but sorta). The problem is the in low gears the stock ECU timing is ramped (Like your log) pretty well matching where you switch it over to your timing. In 5th gear your timing is probably MUCH higher.. 20ish at the same RPM so when it switches to your timing it jumps down to 7 degrees from say 20 which is a huge jump which will induce knock.

You have two solutions if this is the problem. One, get rid of stock timing from 2k-3k so the only time it is using stock timing is under 2k. Or... dont try to floor it in really high gears.. honestly you shouldnt need a reason for that anyways Hope this helps your problem.

I had the same problem. My remedy was to set 10% load site to "ECU" and let teh stock ECU control teh timing, that helps a bit.... then I lower my timing in the 2750-3250 RPM a bit more just to reduce knock. I don;t see much decrease in performance because the engine is not supposed to see high load in those RPM anyways.
