UTEC Loses Power at constant throttle

After reading the problems that other people are having with their UTECs dying, I am more concerned about a problem I've been having with my UTEC.

On the highway, when running constant throttle at between 80-90mph, the engine will all of a sudden lose a significant amount of power. After which, the check engine light will come on and stay on. It takes several seconds for the engine to recover and obviously I let off the gas right away when it happens. This has now happened to me 3 times in the last week.

At first I thought it was the custom tuned map I was running. I switched to stock-mode and the problem happened again. So I took out the UTEC last night and will see if it happens on the stock ECU.

Anyone experienced this? I'm guessing it's either a boost leak, or a problem with the UTEC. But since it always happens at constant throttle (on the highway), I'm uncertain.

Sounds like knock. And the utec is pulling timing really fast. Your stock ecu is probably doing the same thing a little more subtley.

What gear were you in. 5th gear will always knock for me when I get above 15psi, so I just down shift.

If this is happening at a constant throttle just cruising I would take a look at the logs and see if something strange is happening at a tip in point vs throttle position. It sounds like you may be experiencing the UTEC switching between the ECU map and its own maps. The only thing that doesnt make any sense is at a constant cruise throttle you should be riding in the 0% load column. It may have something to do with switching from Open loop to closed loop fueling though as well. If you can get a log of this when it happens it would be much much easier to diagnose!

If you can.. find out what code it threw.. what your describing sounds like a P0300 code, which is probably not directly UTEC related.

I agree with MalibuJack. You are in close-loop mode when cruising, so UTEC should have no affect to the stock ECU program. I had that before and it was P0300, misfiring. Take a look at your plugs to see if they are fouled. You might have ran too rich with your map and fouled the plugs. Try to replace tehm with some cheap copper plugs and see if the problem goes away.
