Inconsistencies with UTEC

I was taking to a suby owner about the UTEC, and he mentioned that the UTEC was notorious for being inconsistent in making its power. @ the same time, Ive talked to suby owners with the UTEC and they have nothing but praise.

Additionally, I am now aware about the UTEC using "static timing". I dont want to start any flame war, as Im just a noob with piggybacks, but is the Xede also static, and are most piggybacks static?

Well, I can believe the inconsistencies about making power, simply because the UTEC is an easier tool to use than a complete standalone, so more people without strong tuning experience are using it. The more experienced tuners probably are getting better results and aren't "Hunting for a good tune".. I won't comment on the timing only because I don't have enough experience with it to compare it with a competitor's product that I don't know all that much about.

Also its important to be aware that in some cases, the subaru would 'learn modifications' and tune them out.. our ECU in closed loop can also do the same, but not to the same extent.. that could be another source of the information.

Its entirely possible that the person you talked about the UTEC with, does not have any experience with one, and only is going by what he's read on forums.. where the others you have spoken to that you knew had the UTEC have had good experiences.

Thats part of the problem with information you get on the internet.. in some cases, its misinformation thats been repeated often enough that its taken as fact. Its really hard to get an impartial view on any product, there will be people who love it, and people who hate it, and their reasoning for both sides may or may not be based on fact.

The fact that the UTEC is a User Tunable Engine Computer and that it's easy as hell to tune, meaning anyone can sit down with a lap top and claim to be a tuner and possibly plug in data and probably make more power. If you are shooting for a too lean of a/f or you are running too much advance yes it can be inconsistent.

But think of it this way the UTEC gives you more visual tools than the average afc and timing controller. Put it like this a stock car often goes through the steps of detting then pulling timing to make the peak power for the current conditions. You never see the det events cause you don't have any tools to see it.

When you get the utec you get to see this. Weather changes, gas, weight in the car, boost control, etc. everything turns into a factor when you are running a standalone. That is why we make it USER TUNABLE, so if you get a det event you will say ok.. maybe I need to pull some timing. Then your all set. Again, this happens on stock cars but you don't get to see it... so you think a car is consistent. My wrx was more inconsistent when it was stock than with the utec, go figure. It's about the tuning.

The Chip Torque Xede does not have static timing control, the timing input into the Xede is added or subtracted to the ecu's timing at that load site and rpm commonly called an offset. Basically our timing is "pure timing" from your timing map, unless you have a knock event which our ecu will retard the timing for you until you can get to a laptop and fix the problem.

Thanks,
Jermaine~

who tuned your car? a proper dyno tune always is much better than guessing. Bring it down to turbo trix, thats where I planned on going. Junior will take good care of your car and utec. (i bet he cant wait to get his hands on one) The utec if anything has been the most consistent for me and easy to use. it gives you the same power all the time. when you do dyno pulls with it its rarely off by 1hp. again it all depends on your tune, your mods, and how aggressive you are going. if you need any help or need to talk about it kenny just PM me. Or talk to jermaine or nathan...they'll make your ears bleed with knowledge (prob to the point where we dont understand)

Nothing could be further from the truth...the user tends to be the inconsistent one, not the ecu. In fact, few ecu's are as dead on stable as the UTEC are
