ECU question.

I'm currently in the market for an 03' ECU. My dealership said that I'd need to obtain the immobilizer from the same car that the ECU was from. Is this true? It made sense at first, but as I think about it, couldn't they just program my keys (or new keys) to the new ECU with my current immobilizer? Any knowledge on the topic would be much appreciated.

Why do you need a new ECU?

Current ECU has some spliced wires and is throwing a CEL that I'm too lean and the dealership has checked several times and hasn't found a problem. They told me to see if maybe it was the ECU and the easiest way to do that is to buy a used one, rather than buy it through the dealership.

The immobilizer needs to be reconfigured to work with the new ECU. This is something that the dealership should be able to do.

Alright, well I called the dealership and told them I got my new ECU and I was ready to come in, and they told me that I needed the immobilizer from the steering column that went with the ECU I received. I was under the impression that they could convert my immobilizer to the new ECU...am I wrong?

I think you are correct -- at least everything I have read.

Call another dealer and ask the same question

That was my exact thought. I'm going to call another Mitsu dealer here and see what they say.

If not, I wonder if I can order a brand new immobilizer and have it configured for this new ECU. Anyone have any thoughts on that?
