They're totally different. The UTEC costs 3 times as much, but you get a least 3x the functionality.

S-AFC trims fuel (piggyback style) in each RPM range by a percentage and that's all it can do.

UTEC is a piggyback but it controls fuel in standalone style by allowing you to specify an amount of fuel rather than a % correction. The resolution is greater as well. It also offers a standalone style igntion timing table. You can adjust the primary rev limit, it adds 2step functionality, TPS and RPM based boost control, and a lot more.

Mind you this is the short short version of the explanation, but it should give you an idea of their basic functionality.

yeah i know about the utec. i had one on my old car (wrx) for about 3 months. just ran it off the base maps thought, as there aren't any places really around here to get it tuned. before i got a chance too, i bought an Evo.

if you were just doing basic mods though. which would be better to buy the afc or the utec. would it be worth the extra coin to get the utec right away? prolly right? or what should i get or what do you recommend?

If you never had the time to tune with your last car you might end up in the same boat again. Sounds to me you might be better off with the AFC and put the money saved somewhere else.
