It is not that easy, it would take you a lot of reading and a lot of siting nearby someone doing the tuning. There are so many differents methods and instruments that you have to take it easy.

SuperAFC
Utec
wideband
AEM EMS
Reflash
Autronic
ECUTEK
power commander
DSMlink
Piggyback

I am just throwing you random names but that is just to give you an idea of many names used on the world of tuning..there are hundreds of other names but like I said, take a step by step and get familiar with the names first then work your way out..

Needless to say that you should be very familiar with automotive mechanics so that you understand the huge risk of messing around with the tuning, ie: put 87oct on a evo and turn the boost up and see what is up.(that type of thing).

Every single aspect of a bolt on has a huge final result, put the wrong size injectors and you will ended up slower than before, put a ****y BOV and you will never achieve the boost you want, etc, etc
Like I said in the begining, reading, reading and more reading.

+1 to that but there are some good write ups to get you started, go on www.nasioc.com and search for the UTEC tuners guide...

^^ Yeah, Ironically I had a UTEC on my WRX with the optional remore control cable to switch maps. Despite I had the car perfectly tuned I still hesitated to made any changes to the tuning. I purchased the remote cable with the rotary switch to change maps so that I could fulfill the different racing and daily driving conditions.

It all boils down to your goals. I did 4 years of mechanical vocational school and I consider myself an apprentice hobbist of cars. Even for someone like me that goes through cars like underwear I still believe the world of tuning is something to not mess around unless you are 100% fullly commited to it. But that is juts a personal opinion, there are some brilliant people on this forum that are actually willing to take the challenge of tuning on their own.

To me, the best way is to get familiarize with the terminology, also to be very profficient with the mechanicals aspects, to be the shadow of a tuner, even an amateur tuner and last but not least a trillions of hours of reading and forum participation.
