The UTEC uses the knock differently than the ECU, so what i would do is go back and start logging with the UTEC and Evoscan or Mitsu logger and see where the UTEC picks up knock but the ECU logger doesn't. Adjust the knock RPM accordingly in the UTEC parameters

Close, MBT stands for (M)inimum timing for (B)est (T)orque. An odd acronym, I know, thats why so many people mess it up. The reason why "minimum" is there is that becasue you want to run the least amount of timing advance possible to get the best torque possible. So if you make x ft lbs running 15 or 16 degrees of spark (and x is the most possible), MBT is 15, becasue it is the "minimum timing". You see? You want the minimum because you get the least peak cylinder pressure, less chance of knock, letc. Your understanding is correct, there is a point where advancing spark timing does not give you any more torque. Basically, there is too much pressure building before TDC to get further increases in torque.

That being said, you are most likely not at MBT on premium pump gas. You would have to run C16 or something similar to see MBT at most rpms or running very low boost. With turbocharged cars, it is usually best to trade off a bit of timing to allow an increase in boost pressure, especially on pump gas octane levels. Meaning, turbo cars tend to be happiest running less timing than MBT, but with slightly higher boost than you could if you did run timing at MBT.

Mercenary,

Thanks for the correction....your explenation makes perfect sense. My theory was sounds just did not have it exactly right....good thing that all through my engineering classes I got partial credit.
