UTEC vs ecu Flash
I am currently in a small predicament. I purchased my Evo with 40k miles on it and a few light mods.
Utec
Nology hotwires
K&N typhoon intake
Full exaust gutted converter
I really want to get the most out of my tune for the least time and cash wasted. I have been looking at either tuning my UTEC or getting a jestr flash. At the moment I am not overly satisfied with the performance of the UTEC, in wide open throttle the boost goes to 1.4 but falls back repetitively to 1, this does not happen in stock mode. I have tried downloading new maps from turboxs but they do the same thing. Would it be worth while to just sell my UTEC and go down to Orlando and get it flashed

Wow, no wonder that guy was selling it. YOu have perhaps the worst combination of mods in the history of Evos. Here is my suggestion:
1) When asking about the UTEC or any tuning device, it's best to ask in that specific forum. This is Evo General, not Evo Tuning and Engine Management. There is a specific UTEC sub-forum and an EcuFlash sub-forum, each of which has some tuning gurus, some of whom have and still use BOTH at the same time. Generally, though, the UTEC has become obsolete, so I'd suggest selling it and going with a Jestr flash if that's your preference for flash tuning.
2) Remove the Nology wires and install OEM wires ($40)
3) Remove and throw away the K&N Typhoon or sell it if you can, but if you sell it, then that's just passing the buck to another unsuspecting Evo owner who will get screwed by that intake
4) What does "full exhaust gutted converter" mean? Did you mean to say it has a full turboback exhaust with a stock cat in the middle that is gutted? I couldn't tell.
5) Get an MBC, fuel pump, and JDM MR DV to go with your full TBE and Jestr flash for a complete, proper stg1 Evo VIII.
I have to admit my great concern for you buying an 03, the most problematic of years that was not only modded, but modded TERRIBLY. There's no telling what all is wrong with that car, so I hope you are very mechanically inclined.

I already told you everything warr said mang. Trust me on this one, the guy who had that car before you had NO clue what the hell he was doing. And I thought it didnt have a downpipe? Do everything warr has said and get that jestr flash and you will be way happier with the car. You said youself a stock 2005 with nothing but a tune was faster than the car.
If i remember correctly yours is the red EVO with all the decals on it I saw a few weeks back while I was in JAX correct?
Its rare that I agree with WARTALON, but this is one of those times. Most of the stuff they put on the car is pointless or not of great quality. Fix that stuff and then get your Jestr Flash... you will think its a whole new car.

If you want help fixing whats wrong with the car, im more than willing, as long as my cars down I have nothing better to do, ill probibly ride my bike out to the car meet tonite, so if I see you there ill talk to you. There are so many evos in jacksonville, im sure we can find a set of stock wires and a factory airbox to put in your car. One question for bad evo, with the utec, the factory ECU will still be there correct? That would be ultimatly gay if you had to get a new ECU.

KartaRailed, the UTEC is a piggyback, so it can be removed leaving the stock, unmolested ECU intact.
I think this guy got excited and bought the wrong car, but with our help (mainly you Jax guys), we can help him end up with what he thought he was really buying...

I know for a fact (sorry dude) that he got too excited and bought the wrong car. I nearly did the same thing in miami. The car was an apex silver '05 that the dealership was gonna sell me for 23000, keep in mind this was in mid 2006, so that was a STEAL. When I finally saw the car I was heartbroken, but for some reason almost still bought an evo with a VTA bov, turbo timer, intake, and a horrendously slipping clutch, and a red regular lancer interior with a evo upper back seat in blue. Lucky for me my pops stepped in and said, "no you effing idiot, that car is a peice of shat".
Then I flew to new jersey and got as mint a used evo as I knew existed and drove that beast right back to florida.
Im gonna help this guy as much as I can though. Im pretty sure brandon or one of those guys has a stock airbox that they might be willing to part with on the cheap. Or at the very worst a decent SRI, rather than that K&N peice.

well the story is that i bought the car 3 days after some lady destroyed my b18accord that i put alot of work into, i really had 3 days and i wanted something fast for 20k. when i got it there were alot of boost leaks, bad spark plugs and wires, leaking everything. after some new hoses plugs and wires the car is holding boost fine and is driving alot faster than when i first bought it, but definately needs some work. i dont understand why the stock airbox would be better than a short intake, but thats what ive heard from many people and the ones of you who have met me in person. i plan on selling the UTEC for sure now, so lets pretend that i get 500$ for it, what do you think i should do first?

The intake is killing the accuracy of your MAF sensor. It makes tuning extremly difficult, although a decent tuner can extract power from one. Although it is general knowledge that the K&N never makes power. You will probibly never sell the UTEC, its outdated like Warr said. Especailly not for 500 dollars, that is almost more than they were new.

ok well thanks for all of the help guys, but two more questions. what if i attach a cone filter to the stock intake pipe with no airbox(buschur style)? will that help more? also could my turboxs BOV be screwing things up?
