DTC P0234: TURBOCHARGER WASTEGATE SYSTEM MALFUNCTION
.
TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION
• The ECM checks that the engine is not overcharged by always monitoring intake air volume.
• The ECM protects the engine by shutting off fuel when an overcharged condition is detected.
.
DTC SET CONDITIONS
Check Condition, Judgment Criteria
• Volumetric efficiency of 210 − 230% for 1 second.
.
TROUBLESHOOTING HINTS (The most likely causes for this code to be set are: )
• Turbocharger wastegate actuator failed.
• Charging pressure control system failed.
• ECM failed.

That was copied that direct from the evo manual...

Hey bhamEVOguy - the DTC code is the same.
Sorry if the official title in the evo manual doesn't match the verbage in a hand held scanner...but if you'll notice,
the symtoms describe an overboost condition, most likely caused by the fact that the WG didn't
open properly for some reason.

Hitting boost cut is from the MAF seeing to much airflow 99% of the time.

Your intake doesn't let the MAF work the way it was designed to. The Stock air box is very good an regularizing the air flow so the MAF can get a good reading.

Your exhaust mods also let the turbo flow more air, and peak boost (flow) is higher.

The combination of these two mods, with out a proper tune, commonly causes this issue.

A boost LEAK has the same effect and will throw the same code. Its not reading the pressure going into the motor or even the air going into the motor. All the ECM knows is how much air the MAF is flowing. Its critical for its signals to be accurate or the car will run like crap and/or hit boost cut.

Hope that helps!

same thing happen to my evo, when i put in a ebc. it was all fuel cut. I got that taken care of by setting the ecu to eliminate the fuel cut. If am not mistaken it happens when you overboost and the ecu send the signal to stop fuel intake, all because your running more boost than stock. please correct me if i'm wrong
