Tuning 101

Ok this has probably been beatin to death, and i am new so dont kill me anyone if its not in the right spot.

My question is how do you even get to learn about tuning in the first place. I saw one place about going to school etc...

Just curious about this..

the easiest way to learn is to watch someone else or go with a tuner that's verbose in their email so you can get a feel for what changes are being made, where and why.

Do you have any examples of a stock map and a reworked one that I could look at?

He doesn't need a tuner verbose in email. He needs to sit shotgun next time we tune his car again in person. You are welcome do just that.

If you can make friends with a knowledgeable tuner who actually knows how to correctly tune (you'd be surprised how rare that is) and watch/help that would be great. I would definitely recommend taking classes and reading books too. I've taken classes from EFI University and can recommend them. Greg Banish's class (http://www.calibratedsuccess.com) seems good too, but I haven't taken it or known anyone who has, but I have read his book which I would recommend reading Engine Management: Advanced Tuning. Of course getting actual dyno time and hands on tuning experience is invaluable, but it's not something you just want to start trying and change things without knowing what you're doing or why.

yep, sitting with the tuner and watching/listening is by far the best way. sadly many tuners don't like to talk while they are tuning or after for that matter which can be frustrating for a customer that just shelled out dough.

I like to keep the customer in the loop so they get a feel for what's being done to their car, it makes them appreciate the work that goes into a good tune.

The most dangerous thing in the world is someone who has no idea when they are in over their head. It's sometimes hard to tell who those people are because they seem so confident. That's what makes them dangerous.

Also, be suspicious of people that claim to be "instinctive" or "intuitive" in their capabilities. This is usually covering up for a lack of rigor and true understanding.
