Cobb map AFRs

So with my stock map I always ran very rich(as I can tell from the black smoke that dumps out of the back when I floored it). I am going to be putting quite a list of parts on the car this weekend, including a fuel pump, all new I/C piping, new o2 housing, 10.5 hotside and some random stuff(all in sig).

So the question is, should I stick with the stage 2 93oct map (not my first thought) or use the stage 1(hell even the 91 oct maps?), or possibly the stock map again until my tune in december?

Basically I know the pump will bring my AFRs down but I know the other breathing mods will bring them up quite a bit. Does anyone (looking at you COBB guys) have a good suggestion as to which map would be best. The richer the better right now, but I want something that is ready to compensate for a larger volume of air going in(maybe higher MAF scaling if the cobb maps use any of that?)

Thanks!

I'm just curious...did somebody who is going to do your custom tune tell you that in December they would have the COBB Custom Tuning Software?....cause how could you get a custom tune without that....unless you plan to go back to open source.

Obviously in terms of what you asked I have no idea.

Yes basically the tuner is expecting to have the S/W when I will be there. Or I will just have to wait it out if there is a delay. If the S/W release gets pushed back(I hope not cobb ) then I will prolly just use a cable and open source flasher to get everything limping along until then.

First, If I were I wouldn't wait for COBB in this forum to chime in about which base map may be best to run with these new mods you want to add prior to PRO-TUNE being out....I would just call them.

and for what my garbage $0.02 are worth....I think if the software isn't out to give you the custom tune with the AP I would just wait on it and then get your new mods put on once the tuning software is available....who knows what could happen going from AP to open source and back to AP again for another custom tune....let alone the secondary cost of tuning time

So far no one does seem to have a timetable on COBB releasing that software....I would bet if it gets within two weeks or so of X-mas and it is not out that it won't be available till '08 since COBB takes off for holidays.

well, I'm putting the mods on so my options are:
A) flash around different maps and see what runs best
B) if none of those work well, then go to stock and see
C) if that is not running well I will unmate the cobb and put my own tune on there and just wait until I can get it protuned to put the cobb back on

I don't see the downside here and I expect the protuner software might be available sooner than you think. But if not I'll just run around until it is.

I assume by the way you wrote it you are able to tune yourself with open source. So technically you wouldn't be out any $ if you went that way...which would be good

Have you called them at all to ask...in regards to your option A? I'd be curious myself to see what they say about it

And I hope you're right I'd rather be customed tuned sooner than later

Actually, the more I look at what you want to do I have upgraded IC pipes on now.....The Evolutioner just put on the o2 housing....and things run just fine.....my AFR's that were monitored on the dyno didn't change or get into any redzone after the pipes went on....the other stuff you mention I don't what that stuff is without reading up on it so I have no clue there........but I think the ICpipes and o2 would be fine and you probably wouldn't have to change the maps at all......just check the knock sensor section to see if that gets wacky i guess

First, until you install the cams, your air fuels will not change much. The cams will make the car a little leaner maybee .5 point. the pump will make it a little richer maybee also .5 point.

Now, if you install in intake, all bets are off.

he could install an intake now....but it has to be the cobb intake...the stage1&2 is built for either stock, panel filter, or cobb intake

Looking at your list installing the IC pipe, O2 housing, tbe, 10.5 hotside, forge BOV, and the manifold with the stage 2 flash should be fine but you wont feel the full potential of the mods until pro-tuned. I would hold off on the fuel pump, forge WGA, and the cams until you have a solid date when your tuner will have all the AP pro-tuner software.

This intake is the one that came with my injen pipe kit (whatever it's not one of the top three name brands, sue me it's affordable). I very well may just not put the hardpipe intake on unti l I get on the dyno, we'll see how it runs with it on there first.

Cams aren't going on until right before the tune anyways so I'm not too worried. As mad VIII pointed out the AFRs will "probably" be about the same after the pump upgrade and all of the other breathing bits get on there...pump is going on before cams so if I run super rich that's fine and it means I have headroom for the cams.

I realize that this won't be full-potential, but I want to have everything installed and working alright before I get to the dyno, plus it saves me a ton of labor and time later on. So assuming everything runs ok for the time being, I will be super happy when I DO get that PROtune and see what all this stuff is going to do for real (93 oct and 100 oct maps )

Thanks for the responses guys, I need the sanity check to make sure I'm not totally out of line here. If anyone else has comments good or bad, please post them up!
