There is still no reason that you would have a limitation with the stock ECU for power. You can use MAFT or MAFT pro and either go to a bigger MAF or speed density and still use the stock ECU to tune. For the price involved it definitely is the most cost effective, retains smog legal status (at least from the OBDII check), and the greatest range of driveability.

Just using a hotwire MAF (like the GM) in a Evo/DSM has proven troublesome in rainy weather if there is an abundant level of moisture getting into the intake stream. Ask Lucas English about it and he can share the pros and cons. Of the standalones you listed, Cobb doesnt count as a standalone, the MAFT was covered which leaves the Autronic.

While it is certainly a good piece of kit (had one on a WRX) it isnt as widely used or sold as an AEM and has some features that you most likely wouldnt need compared to the AEM. Add to this price and availability as well as general support make it less than ideal. Unless you have access to someone that tunes ALOT of rally cars (which you do..Dave LaTourrette in North Bend) with it I would tend to shy away from it.

Ok, I decided to go with the stock ecu and then when thats done, after more research I may go with the Maftpro system or the Maft translator system in the future.

I was wondering if anybody knew a good way for me to try and educate myself on how to do open ecu tuning for my on my own. What soft wear would I need? Are there any good books or threads that I should read?

Id say stick with the stock ecu... You only need to run a standalone when you want to push ridiculous power!

I am looking into what would be the best way to go with engine management and I had 3 different tuners tell me 3 different things so I was wondering if anybody on this forum could help me figure this issue out. Ok, so one tuner has said that I should get the Maftpro system http://www.maftpro.com/index.shtml and then look into a 3 bar map sensor and another tuner has said that I should go with the Autronic system http://www.autronic.com/index.html and the last tuner who I just spoke too said that I should go with the Cobb system http://www.cobbtuning.com/ . They all made some convincing reasons why they sought so and gave me some insight on how they felt about the other systems like one tuner saying that Autronic is way too much of cpu for your current setup an I would never get my money worth. Also saying that I would not pass emissions with this setup. Another tuner saying that I will pass emissions(Which is true?). So confusing. I would like to build my car as a street car that runs on pump gas.

If you guys could give me some of your advice about what I might want to do Ill greatly appreciate it.

Thanks

I'm currently running this turbo kit along with hks 272's, BJ's racing manifold, 880 injectors, and a crap load of other mods while being managed by an Autronic SM3 ECU. I will tell you this, stay far far away from the Autronic unless you live near a very very very good tuner whom knows this system well. I have been using this ECU now for nearly two years and hate it to death. I'm actually in the process of switching back to my factory ECU which will be custom flashed using ecuflash. I've talked to several tuners about this and they have told me that the most I MIGHT lose is MAYBE 20 horsepower at the wheels (currently I'm making 449 to the wheels @ 21 lbs on 93 octane) but since the software for flashes is constantly getting better I might not lose anything at all, especially since my current tune is pretty conservative. I had originally planned on reaching for the 600 whp mark but have since dropped that idea and decided that upper 400's and possibly 500 whp on pump with a little help from meth maybe is good enough for me

Wow you really do have a similar setup as mine. But the numbers that you put down are crazy big. I have made about 402whp on a Dyna-pack with a really crappy ecu flash before I installed the cams and some other mods. My goal is to make about 450 whp to 500 whp on 92 octane gas so you just about got what I am shooting for. So jealous. I have been reading this thread allot https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sh...d.php?t=302895 and have been wanting to learn how to do my own ecu flashes. Spend as much time on it so I can get the best performance out of my car.

Thanks about the Autronic. When I found out that I would not pass emissions with that thing and how capable the stock ecu was then that option was out the door for me.

By the way hows your 880 injectors? I have 750 injectors and was wondering if the capacity would be enough for my tuning plan.

Also, great handle name I can totally relate to the feeling of seeing my bank account never having any money in it.

your going about it the wrong way

pick your tuner first, and then whatever they recommend go with.

that said, I would find a tuner that knows stock ecu reflashes in/out (Mellon/TTP or whoever )
