first thing to do - is to start looking in the right forum

ie: the ECUFlash forum. there are a ton of stickies in that thread to get you started.

Sorry to hear about your weight problem. Did you call Jenny yet?

As a start, go to WikiPedia and read the entire history of all EVO models.

I would spend a lot of time poking around this forum. There is a lot of info here, but unfortunately, it is not easy to find it all. Go from forum section to forum section and read all of the sticky threads at the top of each sub-forum.

Use Google to simply search for whatever topic you want to know more about. There is a lot of info on individual owner's websites; many have detailed accounts of their entire build process with pics, dyno graphs, etc. These are always informative.

Start off with the "How to tune an Evo" sticky in the ECUFlash forum. Check out the wikipedia thats recently been developed. It should be near the top of the ECUFlash forum. Then if you still need some bathroom reading material, buy Forced Induction Performance Tuning by A. Bell. Do a ton of searching around here and poke through every thread of interest to see what other people are asking, and the answers they are getting. Good luck. It wont be a quick process. Just when you think you got it, you'll realize you just opened another door to another set of questions.

My brother has the second book on the page and it's pretty good. It breaks it down fairly well. Good luck.

The most useful thing i have ever read in one place is the Sticky in the ECUFlash forum "How to tune an Evo".
Next I would recommend "How to tune and modify engine management systems" by Jeff Hartman. Its a pretty good book.
If money is not a concern, you could look into taking an EFI 101 class. Its a 2 day class and runs $425 if you sign up early if im not mistaken. I want to take this but dont want to spend the money (too much to buy for the car).
These forums are really great, it just takes alot of time to read through everything, but there is alot of great stuff on here.

Tuning is a time consuming thing to learn. I consider myself a smart guy (Im a mechanical engineer) and it has taken me a long time and alot of reading and re-reading to understand this stuff. You really need to have a passion and burning desire to learn this stuff.

Good Luck!

well i do i also consider myself a smart guy... i feel like i'm way to good to be where i am but family business keeps me here for the moment as a Caterpillar heavy equipment mechanic/welder/fabricator and anything else my dads need me to do. i also feel like i'm alone in how much i love cars and want to learn everything i can about tuning. There's none of this on CAT's lol..... anyway no one i know enjoys road racing or cars that i know so i rely on you guys..... this ended up being a very useful thread and i hope it helps a few other people find more info.

i'm reading the how to tune thread (somehow i never saw it before) and i plan on getting a book to help. also getting my car tuned tomarrow and he said he'll give me the data logging program and a cable and explain it a little bit to me so i'm on my way

I would recommend taking a EFI 101 class.
