Tuning my Evo 9 for better response, Mivec questions
Hi guys,
I've got an built Evo 9 with a reasonable list of mods,
at the moment, under 3,000 rpm the car feels so unresponsive and laggy and slow..
i'm not talking about turbo lag, it's just the engine has no sense of urgency..
when I need to merge or dive into traffic or something, I feel hesitant unless it's Totally clear incase i just fall on my face and get rear ended..
I'm not expecting instant spool up or anything..
but I feel it might be the Mivec map... because as soon as the revs sweep passed 3,000 rpm It almost feels like the car goes "on cam" even tho it doesn't reach full boost till 4 something.. the car just feels much more responsive and urgent and u can play with the the throttle 3k+
anything below that it's just dead...
my car is built for top end, so perhaps theres no way around it.. and I thats "just the way it is" and I have to live with it... but before I give up. i'd like to see if perhaps its the Mivec map..
does mivec tuning differ for larger cam/turbo cars? do I advance later? do I use more/less total advance?
pertaining engine mods:
rods/pistons (8.5:1 comp)
HKS 272s
AMS intake mani
HKS 3037s Turbokit
HKS FMIC kit
Apexi intake
TBE
etc
91 Pump
so I don't know if it's a combo of a low compression 2.0 with a intake mani, cams, big *** FMIC etc to fill on a large turbo and i'm expecting too much... or if I can fiddle with the Mivec and make the engine more "peppy" and urgent...
but most of the Mivec Tuning and suggestions I've read tend to pertain to the Stock turbo/cam and bolt on cars... what about cars like mine?
so Basically I'm trying to focus on the 1-3,000rpm area at the moment before I worry about the peak power:
this is what my current Mivec map looks like:

I was thinking of using the suggested maps in the Tuning guide.. but wasn't sure how they would effect my modded car...

I feel maybe I should be using LESS timing advance at low RPM high load cells because I'm still out of boost and not flowing enough air still?
what do you guys think?/suggest? etc?
Thanks

The first thing that I would do is ditch that funky turbo immediately. There are so many excellent turbo options currently available. However, that one in particular should be relegated to serving as a doorstop for the backyard gate.
dunno why everyone is hating on the 3037S, theres so much false info
someone along the line said it was crap, and the lie has been perpetuated since then.
most of the ppl who complain about it never even tried one, (due to the high price point no doubt)
If i was on stock turbo and such and it was a debate of what turbo to buy them this would be a diff convo.. but it's already ON the car and running WELL..
why should I spend money 2x?
I don't see the point in buying something like an FP black (same spool up approx) for 2 Grand.
and then worry about oil lines IC pipe Downpipe intake pipe etc allover again...choke the car with a (possibly) small back side, (potentially)raise turbo back pressure and such, all for what? 100hp or so?
seems like a waste of coin to me
I already have Tubular headers, Ext gated, proper down pipe (no more O2 housing non sense) big intake pipe etc..
I could spend part of that 2k on a meth injection. go Speed Density and boost the snot outta my car as is...
or spend nothing and we have a good convo, and some useful insight so I can learn how to Tune the Mivec properly and then get some dyno sheets and show that the 3037 is not the POS that ppl think that it is

Turbo's make a world of a diffrence , 6262 got me 528awhps on pump gas , 6765 got me 630awhp on pump gas. Compared to my first turbo GT37R wich couldn't break 500awhp on pump gas and maxed out at 689awhp pushing it to 703awhp which didn't last long.
yes of course they do, but at no point did I claim I wanted a peak HP car/turbo setup..
and I'm sure the 6765 spooled a hell of alot later and was harder to squeeze between the block and the radiator, and still felt slow off boost...
point being..I was asking about OFF BOOST MIVEC TUNING...
so it doesn't matter if i have the god of all Big laggy turbo's or my "Crap" "old tech" HKS unit...
off boost is off boost...
and this is the area i'm trying to focus on... to improve DD drivability, engine response.. and Area under the curve on the dyno graph...
400-500awhp I think is sufficient for a Street driven DD car...
