Questions for utec owners
Questions for utec owners
Hello, after months of reasearch I'm 99% sure that I will go utec for my tuning needs, I just have a few quick questions for you guys that have been running these things that I havn't seen posted.
1. Assuming I have a serial to usb adapter can I use my Mac g4 laptop as interface? Is there suport software needed/ does it run on a Mac?
2. does it come with a decent manual?
3. Has anyone else had trouble going to turboxs.com? Their web page will not load (I have tried on two differnt computers one on a t1 one on bb. Sometimes when I hit "back" in the browser it will flash up for a second before returning to previous page.
4. Why are some users frustrated with the "limitations" of current software rev?
5. Have any of you guys heard any rumors of Works and TXS in league?
6. What are the disavantages if any from buying from someone besides TXS?
Thanks for your help. Just wait till I get one... Then I'll really have questions!

SOmetimes you'll get a price break (within reason) if you purchase though a TXS Reseller such as www.z1auto.com or other shops.. For the most part there's no difference since they back their product 100% regardless of where you get it.
There really aren't any "Bad" limitations of the current firmware, there are new added features that remove limitations that any piggyback device would experience, a hard-coded ECU Rev/Speed limiter, and Fuel cut..
There are currently ways around some of these features, one of the popular ones is to go with larger fuel injectors. Most of us don't really elect to raise our rev limit since this is also bumped slightly too.
In any case, absolute control over both the fuel map, and the timing and boost maps, allows you to not be at the mercy of a tempermental ECU should you have a car that wants to always go into a high-detonation map which has less aggressive timing and richer fuel mixtures. Intercept devices force you to place offset values on top of what the ECU tries to do, so you can see the potential issues if you have a car that has parameters that drift between maps. Some might see that as a good thing, however I personally don't.
The UTEC manual is "Decent" It has a good base of basic information on some of the functionality. It is lacking detailed information on more advanced features, or tuning.. However the tuning information is really something that someone should already possess if they plan on making their own maps anyway.
If you use a Mac, you really need to only use a serial Communications program.. I don't recall any products offhand, but anything that you can use to dial a modem to call a BBS (If you know what a BBS is) will work with it.
I actually think that OSX has a terminal application for modem communications already on there.. Trying to remember what the name is.. I think its the same name as the Linux app..

Mr. malibu jack, Thanks for the info! You are by far the most prolific and hardcore car geek I have read on this board... I mean that with the highest praise.
I think I will get an old beater Ibm laptop dedicated to running this thing, plenty here at my work. Mac interface sounds messy.
As I plan on running the p2 as my baseline rev limit and other "limitations" don't worry me to much.
Still can't get on TXS's dumb website
Utec for me!

This little app might work for connecting to the UTEC from a Mac.
