wastegate question.

so im thinking about it the other day. but what lbs spring do i need to have in a tial 38mm wastegate for our lancers?

i was planning only running 3 or 4 lbs till december. (till i get pistons/rods installed) and then having it tuned for 9 or 10 lbs... so what bar spring do i need? (or should i use..)

end effect (i want to be pushing about 12 lbs on the street, and be able to crank it up a bit) so should i get one with a .6 bar spring in it? (8.5psi)

this is where i tend to get lost with the wastegate and tuning for higher boost levels. boost controls and all that mixxed together gets a little confusing.. can someone explain this to me? (and im SURE there is a thread out there already, but i just cant seem to figure it out for our cars)

please be nice! (im not 16 years old and ive been working at a mechanic shop for plenty of years)

heres where you can buy tial springs, open up the PDF file and you will see the color/sizes you need.

Alright, here's how a wastegate works. Say you have a wastegate with a 5psi spring inside. The wastegate will open when 5psi of boost is built and release the excess pressure into the exhaust stream. If you would like to up the boost to, say, 10psi you would add a boost controller. A boost controller sits inline between a source on the pressure side of the intake tract and the wastegate. You basically use the boost controller to 'fool' the wastegate into thinking it is seeing a different level of boost pressure and thus you are allowed to run higher boost.

Wastegate springs don't typically come in pressures higher than 15-18psi. So all you need to do is get the correct pressure for the amount of boost you would like to run. If you would like to be running 12psi on the street and be able to increase the boost I would say go for a spring that is 8-9psi. The reason I say this is because some boost controllers will add 2-4psi just by being installed inline. So with the boost controller turned all the way off you will have your 12psi. Then you can increase the boost level from there to whatever you wish.

if he only wants to run 4psi, he needs a 4psi spring. You cant go lower than the psi spring in the wastegate. A mbc will only lower it to that amount or close to it.

Also, ^ you are almost correct, the wastegate will slowly open before the psi for the spring is reached. This is why a ball and spring mbc will increase spool ups. They dont open and allow the pressure to reach the wg until that pressure forces the ball back so it can slide by then reaching the wg and allowing it to open.

OP, once you finally get to the point where you can run say 10psi, you will than want to move up to a .5bar spring

ok. Thanks.. i want to say i knew all of that. just needed to hear it said to me. i thik im gunna get the 4.5lbs spring. and the 8.5 lbs spring. so i can just switch it out when im ready.

i wont have a mbc till after i build my bottom end. so i might as well just use the spring for the pressure i want.
