Baby Steps to Turbo
Baby Steps to Turbo
Ok. I've decided that turbo is going to be the way to go. However, the funds are not present yet. I've got some money lined up and would like to start buying all the extra stuff I'll need to support the RRM Turbo Kit. What will I need to buy? ECU? Engine management?
Nothing... just the kit. That is the beauty of that kit.
Well i take that back... if your going to self install it you'll need a 3/8NPT tap and drill bit set. Then you'll need a breather filter for the side of the vlv cover. Total cost about 10-15 bucks. Then get the kit as it comes with everything you'll need.
If you want more power out of the kit then get a header, catback, testpipe, TB, Intake Manifold. But all that is not needed if you stick with the base kit at 5psi.

get some aftermarket gauges and hook them up, that way you can compare your car before turbo and after turbo.
i would recommend a oil temp gauge, boost gauge, electronic fuel pressure, EGT gauge.\
it should help you prepare.

To add to what everyone else is saying, if you plan on running boost any higher than 10psi, you will need to upgrade your pistons and rods before you install the turbo. That being said, you can do the pistons and rods first, then turbo last. RoadRace hasn't come out with their Stage 3 or XXX yet, but it I'm pretty sure it will involve the replacement of the above mentioned parts so if you want to get ahead of the game, this is pretty much the only thing you could do in advance.
***EDIT*** -- BTW, I found a 3/8" NPT tap at Home Depot for $3.99

IF you just want some simple upgrades that will still help out alot when you are turboed and yet still make a difference before you turbo, I agree with Boe, work on the exhaust. I would go with the RRM header ( it is the only one compatable with their turbo) and a magnaflow exhuast.

I lived in several spots in GR, first jenison, then Grandville, then East GrandRapids, then Kentwood, and also Hudsonville. My family also has a cottage in Allegan, which is closer to Kalamazoo along 131. My best friend went to Western Univ. so I was in Kalamazoo a few times.
But now I live near Chicago, I should update my record.
Take it easy and say hi to your wife (Go Broncos!)

For the rest, I'm probably not going to be going too high on the boost - I just want some more power but don't want to go crazy! I miss my S2000 something fierce and want to get closer to where I used to be. I've already got a new Magnaflow exhaust so I think I'm pretty much done until I get the whole setup. I'd like to find some type of digital display that I can mount in my car that will show the different specs...anyone have anything like that or any ideas on where to look?
