hard wiring radar detector

Has anyone been able to hard wire a radar detector? If so how and do you have pics?

I have an Escort 8500 and am getting annoyed by the phone cord connection.

Thx!

Really?? Was an independent place? Or like a best buy?

Where did they end up mounting it?

It was an independent shop. Had it mounted bottom center of the windshield. The wiring disappears into the dash never to be seen again.

Does anyone know the pin outs on the RJ-11 plug? would be helpful for mounting anywhere in the car. cheap too..since it is really phone cord.

What's the best circuit to tap into for hardwiring a Escort 8500. I have a vampire tap, so as not to cut anywires and void the warranty. I was thinking of using the cig lighter circuit?

passport/escort makes hard wire kits for the 8500 etc... they even have one that has the light/alert/mute-button thing that is found on the cig-plug.

the one w/ the warning light is 29.99 and the normal one is 10 dollars... but i figure its just a basic phone cord so you could buy one and wire it yourself for like 3 bucks or less.

Personally i would wire it at the CD deck... easy place to find/tap either the constant / ign power wire... not to mention its really close to where the radar detector would mount.

Or, if you wanted to mount the detector behind the rearview mirror i would look into tapping a wire at the dome light (there should be a constant 12v there)... you could easily hide the wire by running it under (well, above) the head liner.

the wiring for passport might be a little different so i'll check and reply tomorow... or hell anyone could check by just plugging in the power cord of the radar detector and checking w/ a volt meter... obviously 2 wires are waisted since the cig plug only has power/grnd.

Just my .02, as you can tell i've allready thought about this a bit
