Talking Remote Start Progress/Campus Security Gripe

As you've probably noticed, I've been gathering information about a remote start install for some time now, and over the past week, I've finally undertaken the task of making the install...

First I hooke up my XM radio and ran some wires through the console, installed a LED in my cupholder, and another in the lower cubby bin, which I'll add that I have to move because it shines half in the bin and half on the console...

Next I ran power from the battery to fire the remote start, and tie the XM into... The rubber plug behind the passenger strut tower is a great creation... I finished the day by installing the hood pin switch, and speaker for the alarm.

I yanked the headliner to run the XM antenna through the hole for the FM antenna, and ran the antenna/valet switch on the remote start/alarm/keyless entry, and managed to get everything back together, losing only one metal clip on the passenger side A-Pillar...

I pulled the dash apart again and installed 2 more LEDs, one for each footwell, which I might add that the wires are too short, and must be moved.

The center console was removed again during the week to allow installation of a B&M short shifter and energy bushings, a great Mod I might add...

So why, you ask, am I telling you all this? I attend Rose-Hulman institute of technology and live in an on-campus apartment... For those of you who don't know, Rose is an engineering school of about 1500 students in western Indiana... I'm a senior, and I've lived on campus for all 4 years... Most of the faculty and staff know me... I've been doing these installs constantly for almost 10 days now... Which makes the next part of this more interesting...

I finally decided to hook up the last of the wires for the remote start tonight, but homework delayed these activities until midnight or so... I go outside, and take the lower portion of the dash off on the driver's side (2 Screws, 2 above the hood release (Not Necessary) and a 10mm bolt below the fuse box... 3 snaps, and the panel falls free. I take the 3 screws off the steering column, and it snaps off as well (Clamshell)... 2 10mm bolts later, and the metal pan below the steering column falls free... I unhook the plastic router for the wiring in the steering column and remove the cubby in the center of the console to retrieve my wiring harnesses for the RS and grab the starter wire... 2 minutes later it's spliced, beautifully, thanks to the help of a 3M tap splice... I'm about ready to tap into Ignition 1, and I feel a hand on my shoulder...

"What are you doing there, boy" as I stare into a maglight... It's campus security...

I'm glad to know that they watch my car... But I've been working on it almost daily for a week and a half... you'd think someone would have noticed by then (We only have 4 officers, total)... I explain my story, but aparently it's not good enough, so I'm asked to produce Registration, Title, Liscense, and School ID... Needless to say, I'm frozen at this point... I was told it was too late to be working on my car... so there it sits in the lot...

Disassembled, with ignition wires exposed... That's what gets me... I hope it's still there in the morning... Then I'll finish the remote start install... I'll also post pictures here before I put things back together... With a little luck, it will work come dinnertime (Classes and Work in the way)

Hope this provides some mild laughs...

that really really sucks. but i would have put up more of a fight, mainly asking "why is it too late to work on my car?" and maybe make up some bull**** story that something broke and you need it fixed by tomorrow morning. i mean really, what if you were driving to your dorm at 2am, and got a flat? would they make you leave it there til morning? next time stand up for yourself! say "i gotta finish this NOW biotch!" then as he walks away give him a nice shot of your

To be honest, you are lucky that they are allowing you to continue working on your car. If you are on their property when doing an install, oil change, anything, and got hurt you can sue their pants off.

Lets not jump down their throats, especially when what you are doing is not legal. Unless you have a disclaimer (agreement) with the school to work on their site.

Eh...I woulda just asked if I could put some stuff back on so that the car would be driveable (like cleaning up and putting stuff in the trunk or something instead of scattered about the car like my installs usually are ). Worst comes to worst they say no.

Do you have campus security or campus police? If it was police I would tell them to arrest me. If security I would tell them to get lost. If you pay rent to live there you have every right to work on your car when ever you want.
