Apples and oranges man... Speaker wire doesn't need the RF sheilding because it's a high level signal, far less likely to absorb anything. RCA's have the sheilding because they're only pushing a small amount of current through small wires, and in the automotive environment that spells signal problems.

It really comes down to a 6 of one half-dozen of the other situation. Line level converters have a bad rep behind them, and for good reason most of the time. They're usually made relatively poorly, and act as such. High level inputs on the amp is probaby easiest/cheapest way to go in this situation.

I just installed my stereo from my old car last night, a 1998 Blau Las Vegas. It's not an exact size fit because of the wider and slightly taller face on the Lancer's head unit, but it's definitely flush mounted.

At least in this case, that trim around the stereo is only connected by thin strips of plastic intended to be cut for flushmounting. There are two sets of holes on the side of an ISO DIN unit and with a little drilling in the brackets that came with your Lancer unit, you'll easily have a flush mounted unit.
