Well you are both somewhat correct however the problem with that he is experiencing is that he is not getting enough volume out of the speakers. If you put more power to the speakers then you will get increased volume with less distortion so you will be able to get alot more sound out of the speakers which is what is he wants. It is very true that it is better to over power a speaker (within reason) rather than under power the speaker. The signal travels in waves and if you try to get more out of the source than what it is physically capable of then the waves begin to deform (clip) this is what blows speakers. Sure you can power aftermarket speakers with less power and they will work however you will not get peak performance from them which some people are fine with.

in short ....get yourself a 50-65 watt X 4 amplifier and and run new speaker wire to the speaker locations and it will be a dramatic difference.
