I don't know about where you guys live, but in maryland, if the only thing a cop sees wrong is that your tint is illegal, you can't be pulled over. it can't be mirror tint or too dark...if they pull you over for speeding though, they can make you take it off on the side of the road...
I leave mine on... not worth taking it with... more likely to break it taking it with you for one... most thieves will break in anyway because they figure it is in the glove box or under the seat since that is what most people do anyway... and insurance will cover it anyway... so why stress over it! Additionally the really good thieves know what the decks are regardles... and they'll take it face or no face. Especially Pioneer and other decks which it doesn't matter what face you have, it'll still control the unit just fine... you can slap a 3500 face plate on an 8500 and it'll enable it and work.
As far as the Lancer being hard to install a head unit on... are you kidding!!??!! It is the easiest simplest most unbelievably straight forward head unit mounting I've ever seen! I can switch the decks out in under 2 minutes no problem from start to finish. I'm sure a theif can do it even faster. You pull the environment knobs... take out those two screws, pull that main fascia... take out the 4 screws around the deck and you are done!
In general... just isn't worth taking the deck with you... if you really believe that it not being on there makes a difference.. take it off and put it under your seat...
