Arrow How to reduce rattles and road noise.

Starting this afternoon, I'm going to be working on removing rattles and Dynamating my car. Its a work in progress, so follow along.

Today's first lesson: How to fix annoying rear deck rattles.

I noticed even with my OEM speakers that there was a rear deck rattle, especially from the passenger side. I found the easiest, cheapest, and quite effective fix was this...

1. Buy a thick foam shoe insert from WalMart. Should cost less than 3 bucks.
2. Cut the insert into 3x1 inch strips.
3. Insert through trunk into holes under rear deck, as seen below.

The first two photos show an example of the foam.

This photo shows the position of the hole on the passenger side.

And lastly, a bottom shot, and where to place the foam. Only one piece can be seen in this photo, the other is completely inside, opposite the visible piece.

And there you have it. It only took me two cut pieces to completely eliminate that rattle. We'll see if it comes back when I remove the foam, and dynamat the entire rear deck, but that's another lesson.

Today's second lesson: How to partially, and cleanly, Dynamat your trunk hood.

1. Buy some Dynamat, Brown Bread, Cascade, whatever. Check www.ebay.com for some great deals, or go to Best Buy.
2. Buy a small roller. I used the Dynamat wooden roller.
3. Get a few pieces of notebook paper, a pen, and some scissors.
4. Trace both right side shapes on seperate pieces of paper. You only need to trace one side, as you can flip it over, and mirror for the other side.
5. Using the cutouts, outline onto the Dynamat. Don't forget to flip them over for the mirror image.
6. Carefully peel the backing, and tack a small section of the Dynamat to the trunk, when in place, peel off the rest.
7. Use the roller and press firmly to ensure maximum contact with the trunk.

I apologize for the lack of more pictures here, but I'll take more when I Dynamat my rear deck.

Picture of my notebook cutouts.

Picture of the finished product.

Took me about 45 minutes to do everything, and I noticed the difference as soon as I closed my trunk. Bass response seems a bit tighter, with less rattling from the rear.

I haven't had any noise that I've noticed from the passenger taillight. Maybe its something from your muffler or license plate? A tiny piece of Dynamat on the back of your tag will do wonders!

I replaced my license plate frame with one of the chrome ones that says "Lancer" on it from ebay and it got rid of damn near all my outside riddle. (heavy enought to hold th eframe and plate down)

other than that... it's all inside the trunk that I have heard.

for the LP, some guy on the forum cut out a mouse pad to the shape of the LP frame and he said it worked wonders after screwing it under the lp frame.

Tell me how to fix this problem...if you guys have an suggestions. I have the RMR 3 peice spoiler. Every damn time my base hits "semi" hard, the whole ****ing thing rattles like a mother. I have pinpointed it to the break light. It seems as if the break lights are causing the really loud rattleing noise to occur, does anyone know how to fix this. Also it seems since the spoiler isn't solid (hollow on the inside) shacks a lot.

Does anyone else have a driver door rattle? Mine sounds like there's something bouncing around inside the door and I'm 99% sure that it's inside the door, not in the map pocket.

the driver door rattle comes from a steel bracket that is tack welded in the door. it serves no purpose. I just removed it in my car the weld came loose
