Replacing speakers. Need X-Overs?

I'm trying to upgrade the speakers in my 02 Lancer ES. I've added tweeters near the a-pillars, and need to replace the front door speakers with mid/bass.

Some Lancers come with 6 speakers, so I'm wondering if there are crossovers built into the head unit (and wiring for six speakers already), if I need to add crossovers, or if just adding the mid/bass drivers and using the existing wiring should work.

I'm not going for an over-the-top setup, I just want to improve the sound a bit.

Anybody familiar with the wiring setup, and whether or not it's neccessary to add crossovers?

Thanks,

Zoom

I think xovers are pretty well accepted as standard for tweeters because you don't want lower frequencies getting there and distorting their sound.

Ask someone with an LS about the 6 speaker system. There's a few LS owners on the boards now.

Any way I could get a scan of the diagram? From the head unit, is there seperate wiring for the tweeters and the 6 3/4's in the doors, or are they wired in-line?

Also, are the door speakers the same in the ES as in the LS, with the tweeter (and crossover) being the only difference?

Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated....

Thanks,

Thumbs up

Ok , where should I start. Since you have the ES there is really know reason to worry about the audio setup of the LSAll the headunits, whether in the ES, LS, or OZ should be the same. This means the the the crossover for the LS on the a-pillar should be between the door mount speaker and the tweeter. You are going to have to add a crossover between the door mount 6-3/4" and your tweeter you are going to put in. The best thing you could do is buy a component speaker set with will come with the 6-3/4" the tweeter and the crossover. I know for a fact the Infinity makes a 6-3/4" component set. You can buy that from Crutchfield.com, but I would recommend actually calling to order it. You say you don't want to go over the top but if you are going to do this do it right and go with the Infinity Kappas, you won't be sorry, they are costly (~$350) but they are great.
