Ignition and Fuel System

Heres the deal, since I am poor and unable to purchase a turbo anytime soon, I was thinking about doing other things such as upgrading the ignition and fuel systems. But Ive read a lot about most ignition mods and that they wont work for our cars, so does anyone know what can be done? Also what would be good to do in these areas for a non turbo engine? And most importantly would there be any benefit at all or would I just be waisting my time?

without solid mechanical mods, fuel and ignition mods aren't worth anything. you won't need to change either until you crack open the engine.

on the other hand, you can buy a RRM piggyback and have really good mid-range gains. it'll cost you $450 and you have to run higher octane gas. most people find it worth it.

Rhyzin is right. You'll be wasting your time and money doing those mods now rather than later. You'll get marginal gains at best without sufficient power already being produced.

Ive been doing searches and reading about people who have upgraded such things as fuel rails and pump, would there be anything like this that could be done

bad idea

Let's just put it this way, you don't need to really do any of the fuel or ignition until you get Forced induction. Won't do you much good. an Upgraded fuel pump, well the only thing I can think of that could come out of that is pumping too much fuel into your engine, running it rich, and then you would be losing HP. More fuel = less power, More air = More power (funny how that one works) Too much fuel = flooded engine, Too Much air = Detonation. I wouldn't bother with any of that stuff until you got to the point that your engine couldn't handle the power that was being put into it because it was fuel starved. With the ignition side of things, I think the last time I searched on it, the only thing you can really do is advance the timing. only problem is the ECU on the car will re-adjust itself so your car runs like it did when it was first bought. The only other thing I can think of for ignition is AEM CDI, which I don't know if is compatible with the 4g94. Anything else will fry the engine because of the way the spark plugs and all the ignition is set up.

well, if the piggy idea sounds good, but you want more flexibility and plan to do other mods (cams, etc) you may want to check in to eManage. The main unit runs about $350 and you'll need to support tool to get the most out of it (another $40- $140 depending on who you can get it from) and you'll need a laptop to run it. The timing harness runs about another $100. There's also an injector harness (but there were problems with it burning out evo VII and evo VIII injectors..... ) So that's a pretty good sized investment, but you'd have nearly unlimited tuning capability as long as you can run the stock ECU/MAS.

Fuel rails and pumps aren't "go fast" mods. They're support mods. Like a short shifter... the shifter doesn't make you any faster, it just allows you to get to the next gear slightly quicker which can then net faster 1/4 mile times, or keep you in the powerband instead of having to climb back up. The fuel rail just helps keep the engine from bogging as you go past 3500 RPM, but it won't produce any additional power- you can just get to the top of the tach a little faster and more smoothly. So the area under the HP curve might be slightly larger, but the peak won't change.
