Lightbulb Modify Stock Air Box?

After purchasing a K&N Plate filter, and noticing minimal gain, I started looking into ways to increase flow through the air box and filter. Being an Engineering major, and having some help -- I disassembled the stock air box, and found several flow restrictions, which I have started removing... Once I work through them all, I'll post pictures, and hopefully get the car on the Dyno for some before/after numbers... (I'm working off a second stock box).

First I noticed was the "cone" immediately inside the front half of the box. I drilled the rivets and removed it, then plugged the hole for the resonator inside the box. Still using the "gut feel" approach rather than the Dyno, I've found a negligible difference in power. What I have noticed, however, is a great reduction of engine noise at highway speed.

My next move, I think, is to eliminate the neck on the "snorkle"... I'm thinking of cutting the ends and splicing a piece of rubber hose or the likes...

Is this even a worthwhile attempt?

Wondering if anyone has any suggestions, comments, etc. For what to try... Also wondering if anyone has any donor/reduced price stock air boxes to work with...

i say removed everything frmo like the snorkel all the way to the half of the airbox. leave the half of the airbox that the MAS attaches to and just put ur filter like they have in this tutorial

http://thegalantcenter2.com/tutorials/Intake/

since ur filter is standing str8 up, you gotta find a way for it to stand up and stay there...not too hard, ur an engineer

Only problem I see is now you are taking in the the air that is in engine compartment(warm/hot air). Not a very good idea. You want try to get coolest air possible into your intake.(i.e. outside ambient air) With cooler air you get better results. The key here would be to induce cool air and KEEP it cool all the way to turbine or throttle body for NA engines. Ducts with hosing and completly covered boxes (covered with thermal sheets) achieve this easily. The boxes don't have be made of sheet metal (like mine) you can use the stock box and cover with thermal sheets or make a custom out wood then cover it with sheets. If you notice the in first photo, there a small opening on the right side engine compartment. You can easily use duct tubing to guide fresh outside air to your box. I made mine over weekend. For all the sheet metal, duct tubing, zip ties...it came to about $35.00. I think if would have used wood it might have been cheaper still. PEACE

Only problem with the fancy plastic ducting before the panel filter is that it is SUPER restrictive. It's only around an inch and a half when it bottlenecks a little behind the radiator. I think hacking it up is a great idea for some "creative" gains (hopefully).

ahh. I just removed the front snorkel piece and then unclipped the box and pushed the front forward and pushed the clips back down over the filter cartridge itself and the end of the clips under the lip of the front to keep the face pushed forward.
I have pics of this in my profile, i just removed the snorkel last week.

The car runs fine in this winter weather and it has no problems

It is loud as hell. It drives the neighbors nuts, even though they have a tricked out neon. Theyre car is not loud, and looks stupid

I'm trying to keep the cold air flowing... Unfortunately Mitsu has my car right now (I put the unmodified parts on before bringing it back)... So I can't play... but I'm thinking of cutting the snorkel and replacing the bottle necks with a piece of rubber hose... Figure I need about 8 inches to get from the box to where the snorkle necks down... Maybe I can get some research credits for all this....

I don't think it's worth it... even if you got the ideal setup how much hp more would you get? probably not even 1hp. i say scrap the stock box and ducts and make a bracket to hold your filter into place.
