RRM Piggyback / Headers Combo
hey guys,
I apologize if this has been covered but I didn't see anything on this subject.
I've read that the RRM headers will sometimes cause the check engine light to come on. And I remember I read somewhere on here (not sure if this is true) that when the check engine light comes on the ecu basically goes into a "defensive mode" and wont accept any sort of reprogramming.
So my question is, if that is true (which like I said before I have no idea about its validitity) then how would the piggy back work when combined with headers.
And for you guys that are running the piggyback with header (and I know there are plenty of you) Did you encounter any problems with the check engine light? Is there anything you can do to get rid of the check engine light (I think I read something about a mil eliminator but Im not sure if thats what its for).
I know these questions probably sound dumb but I just wanted to make sure what I heard is either true or false so I dont go around believing the wrong things.

as far as i know the check engine light you get what you put in your header doesnt make you ecu lock up. If you cause a cel for some other reason then you ecu will lock up. You can get a fixer for the header cel off of bigjoshracing.com for around $15.

what he's referring to is a discussion many moons ago involving engineerboy and some other people. basically, it boiled down to the thought that the ecu goes into "closed loop mode" and therefore wont' accept any incoming data or maps as in from the PB
however, engineerboy recently reversed his view on this when his cel went on, and he confirmed it was in closed loop, but he still managed to stall the engine by feeding it too little fuel via his emanage
ergo, as long as its the header oxygen sensor (forget which one, sensor 0 bank 2 i think) then you should be OK
i have the kamikaze header with DP and in a few weeks my PB is going on, so hopefully i won't run into any issues. you can try the MIL eliminator, however, I had no luck with mine, my CEL is still on
however, what DID work is constantly deleting the thrown codes via an ODBII scanner at autozone or whatever (DO NOT reset the ecu via unpluggin the battery). basically, i deleted the codes every weekend or so for a while, and eventually they just went away and never came back
of course i had to unplug my battery to install my headunit, so all that hard work got erased, but you get the idea.

I have ran the rrm piggyback and rrm header for about 6 months, or like 10,000 miles; but anyway the header did throw a cel after like 72 miles. No performance loss, just a light. I just took out the gauge cluster and removed the cel bulb and twisted it into a light socket that wasn't useable (there is alot of them on the back of the cluster.) Runs great! I recently also had problems with a "hunting idle" so I just reset the ecu and after two or three days she holds a perfect idle at like ~700 to 800 rpm. Nice!
