Intake question

I want to install an intake on my Lancer. I've been looking at AEM, K&N's Fuel Injection Performance Kit and the Typhoon kit also from K&N. By the way my Lancer is a five speed - I've notice the intakes are different for auto's and manual's. Which do you guys think would be best and why. On my old car ( VW Jetta II ) I had an intake, but recently had to remove it for smog. The first smog wasn't an issue, but two years later nobody would smog it because of "underhood modifications to my exhaust system" - which struck me as odd since an intake isn't part of the exhaust. Anyways, that setup had a CARB exemption, which was ignored - the three intakes I'm looking at are all CARB exempt too, but I don't want to have to swap the thing out every other year - has this happened to anyone else( I live in California) Sorry so long a post and thanks in advance for suggestions and advice

Ah, be good. At least point him in the right direction. I dunno about the FI kit...do you just mean the cold air intake?

Just a little cornfuzzled by the phrasing, but I think I might understand.

If AEM's CARB exempt then that's the way I'd go personally. Anyway, swapping out the intake system is simple. Shouldn't take more than 30-60 minutes. (Cept for the first time when you have to cut/remove part of the splash guard).

Hadn't though about injen, although I don't know why - I looked at one for my Civic - no groans please. I'd actually seen the thread that was suggested, maybe I just asked the wrong question - What do you think about the K&N FIPK especially in terms of legality at smog time, ease of fitment, cost, performance. Since I drive a manual is their some intake that is better than the others?

Do a search... I'm sure you'll find more than enough opinions already given on this subject.

I thought most K&N applications were pretty legit....I'd go with K&N myself they are tried and true with out shelling out an arm and a leg......

Ok well before I got my intake I searched like mad for the right buy. I ended up with the injen intake and I have to say I am very pleased with it. Its easy to install, can feel some tourque gain between 1st and 2nd, and the sound is one of the best I have heard around 3000 rpms. Also it looks damn sexy when i pop the hood. My choice....INJEN CAI ALL THE WAY

I'm sure the question have been asked already, but I couldn't find what I need with the search engine. There is no point in making a new topic so here is my question.

I already have my K&N filter, but I don't have the piping. Is there any sensor that I will have to hookup to the pipe when I make the install.

Appreciate the input - gotta admit I'm leaning towards the K&N kit, but I think I'll look at the Ingen kit too after the comments on it. I wanted AEM, mainly because of the by pass valve for dealing with possible water ingestion, but since that doesn't work for the Lancer why bother? As a side note of those of you that live in California, have you had trouble getting smogged? It seems to me that a CARB exemption is worthless because there are still "underhood modifications" which aren't allowed here.

Slap a MAS adapter plate with an opening matching your filter on the MAS and clamp it. Viola! (Instant short ram)

Hobies right.....you can pick one of these up at a local speed shop just call around. When I used to own an Altima there was really no market for this car but still I wanted SRI for it. I bought a conical filter and the shop ordered me and adapter plate for the mass..it cost me like 30 bux inc. shipping for the adapter.

And lemme tell you from experience, the gains aren't much different from a CAI at all. The only thing you might miss is a slightly different intake sound. Nothin' worth crying over.

That's about it Hobie. Sound. The stock piping isn't straight through therefore you don't get as great of a sound. I can live with it. No complaints.
