Toluene

Hey I was wondering if any Lancer owners out there have ever tried using Toluene as an Octane Booster... I know some evo guys do it, just curious if any boosted lancers use it... Here is the thread on it in the EVO: HOW TO

I wont even go near the stuff... if u get it on ur skin, your skin WILL absorb it and u WILL face serious health complications. Just buy race gas if you want high octane fuel.

of course youy plan on handling it safely, no one really plans on spilling industial chemicals on themselves. It's just safer to use race gas.

I am going to try this in my car today... i'll let you guys know if its good or not. I am going to mix 1 gallon of Toulene w/ 8 gallons of 91 octane, and hopefully get something around 94 octane

Not only do I work with Tolulene, I also work with Xylene and Benzene as well. Courtesy of the U.S. Air Force and their fuel of choice....JP-8.

Being a foreigner in this country, I come from a place where **** gas is standard and we have experimented with all kinds of additives to improve octane.

Some people use napthalene mothballs, grounded up and dissolved in gasoline, and some people use toluene. It has been a while but I think the mixture of toluene to creat an octane booster is somethine like 100 pz. of toluene, 25 oz of mineral spirits (cleaning agent) and 3 oz pf transmission fluid (lubrication agent). Dont quote me on that and if you try this and your car blows up, lol .... i cant be held responsible. Been a long time since I had to work with octane boosters. I have alsoe heard that pure xylene is better than toluene, but again, I have no proof. Also some rally drivers back home also use acetone in their gas.

Personally, with the ease of availability of race gas, I wouldnt mess with these octane boosters... but if you are looking to extract every last bit of power out of your car, despite many people's concerns, I know people that have been running additives for years with little adverse effects on their cars.

Good luck in whatever decision you choose...

Health concerns associated with skin contact of tolulene, or other similar products aren't really that bad unless you are exposed to them every day. I work aircraft fuel systems repair and we are constantly in it all the time. If anything, our hands at a minimum are soaked in it. Because of this, they check our blood once a year to see if our liver is functioning properly. It's not as bad as it sounds, as the blood test is just to cover the Air Force's *** incase something were to go wrong with you. In 10 1/2 years I've been in, I haven't seen someone move out of our career because of a liver problem.

As far as cost for tolulene to increase octane; from what I understand it isn't that cheap and I agree with AirQuez. Just go buy some race gas. Here in Vegas for 100 octane is something around $3.50/gallon. If you add Tolulene to 91 octane, cost is about the same IMO.

I guess my question would be: why? Are you running such high compression, advanced timing or such high boost that you're having detonation problems? And don't you pimp for RRM? Ask Rob what he'd do.
