connecting rod bearings
Wow.... didnt know Mitsu colour-coded the bearings for the 4G94.. all of mine were the same style and size. Interesting info. Mine just had two different sizes, one size for the rod / rod cap and one size for the mains.
God, I hope mine just don't need to be replaced... heh.
And now I'm worried about the damn wrist pins. Of course, I could practice, since I have some of your pistons/rods Hobie!

Check the sides of the pins. I think you have the one I tried to bang out since I was originally just going to ship you the pistons...when I realized how futile it was I just said **** it and sent them with the rods still attached.

Supa Tek - thinking about it. My buddy has ripped apart a few blocks (including his STI most recently), so I'm fairly confident. Add my general knowledge, the advice of great people like HobieKopek and Boeturbolancer, my friends/family, and a service manual, and I'm thinking it's doable.
AirQuez - Wiseco was the company that made the Buschur 10:1 pistons. Hobie gave me 2 of his pistons as collectors items. I loaned them to Buschur so he could have Wiseco make his new ones. Unfortunately, only one came back from Wiseco.

sheep, I'm also going to be doing it myself and asked boe for some tips and he said this:
don't need the head studs for na cars. As far as tips go... take your time and be patient is the best of all. The install is basic and straight forward... check the rod bearings, replace if needed, mark everything and put it back where it came from in the exact way it came off... don't rush anything.
As for gaskets... you need the headgasket and some grey rtv sensor safe silicone. The silicone is used on the oil pan. You'll need new antifreeze and oil/filter... you may want to replace the intake and exhaust gaskets but i never did until my last rebuild... they held/sealed just fine until then. The last rebuild i replaced them since it was only like 30 bucks and i'd reused them enough i thought.
Take notes and pictures if you can't remember everything your taking off. It may sound weird but it will help you if you get stuck during the rebuild. Just remember that the stock pistons are a press fit... you'll need to have a shop press them off and press the new ones on. Thus you usually have to do the teardown on the weekend... swap the pistons during the week and rebuild the motor on the next weekend. Just keep those things in mind.
Good luck,
Boe

Thanks Supa. I've heard much of the same from Boe already. It's probably wise to have these details posted on the web. I'm trying to get Boe to write a piston swap How-To, but nothing yet.
Yeah, you're in for a treat.
Funny enough, the hardest part of my rebuild was removing custom parts that really weren't meant to be taken off. My manifold and fans liked to fight with each other, and I probably spent more time trying to remove them than anything else.
