Hey, anytime I can help a fellow Lancer fan is a good one. I have been in school since August and have learned more than I ever imagined...including about performance and various false pretenses people believe.

What else do you want to know? I have an entire book on this stuff on top of the crapload I have learned in school thus far. 5 more classes left until I work at BMW full-time!

RPW has cam gears as well. If you can find anyone who makes a Mirage cam gear it'd work too. I can't stress enough just how identical our cam gears our from the 1.8l Mirages.

i've farted around enough with this car doing the basic stuff, it's time to decide whether or not i want to play with it for real or just make it look pretty. not having a 2nd car or a garage are real deterants at the moment.

intake and exhaust, those were pretty to get instant gratification from. test pipe...eh. according to el upgrade path from rrm, i should be getting a bored throttle body, but my mind keeps telling me the piggyback sounds more interesting.

Depends...if you go higher compression keep your car naturally aspirated (not forced induction). If you go turbo or super, you want lower compression because the turbo/super acts as a sort of "fake" compression. Say you have 8.5:1 compression and a 10 psi boost turbo...now I don't know the exact math but it would equal around the compression of say 10:1...so high compression + turbo = detonation.

but my mind keeps telling me the piggyback sounds more interesting.
Good when you do heavy tuning...it's like reflashing an ECU but it allows you to go back to stock if you decide to change anything and not like it...if you go with the bored throttle body and the matching intake (called port-matching) it will make a big difference.

They are and aren't...

Your compression is how much your piston can compress your air/fuel mixture for burning...it is step #2 in the 4 stroke cycle... Intake, compression, power, exhaust. You need the cam to take care of #'s 1 and 4, and compression takes care of...you guessed it, #2. If you have too much of a mixture to compress and your timing is too advanced...your piston will hit the valves, or you may explode the mixture too soon, this is called detonation.

Thank god for the almighty search feature

You serious Hobie ? I hope you are - i'm been kicking around the idea of getting a cam and I saw Fidanza made a cam gear for the 1.8 L. I wasn't too keen on getting an RPW cam gear for lack of the timing marks. I am still kicking around that idea or just getting in on that RIPP group buy

How many times must I say they're identical before people take me seriously? Yes, they're the same. I have both. They're the same part #'s, same parts. More identical than Mary Kate and Ashley.

I have the RPW cam gear. Had to "degree" it myself. I really swear by these things. If you upgrade your shaft, get a gear too. Advancing the timing Mechanically has been so much more reliable then messing with emanage/ecu flash. I now use an AFC along with.
