Re: ECU JetChip Upgrade...

*i emailed jet performance inquiring a/b upgrade for our ECU and this is the response i got:

the upgrade package 65002 would be for your vehicle. The 65002 retails
for $399.00 and expected gains would be 12-14 horsepower.

has anyone have any experience with this product and is it worth it, for that price for those gains?

JET is one of the leaders in performance chips, I highly recommend thier products. I'm glad to see that they are doing something for the US Lancer. Now, did they say that the upgrade is an actuall chip, or do you have to send your ECU to them to be reprogrammed? Also, is the upgrade smog legal for CA? Please let me know if they gave you any details on this, thanx!

They seem to be a pretty good product, but I haven't had any first hand experience with them t\let me know as well the info you find out. as far as price for horse power that isn't too bad, considering the gain you get from simalar priced items

The upgrade is a reprogramming of the computer. There is no chip to replace.
The vehicle will still pass smog, as long as it did before the upgrade, but
does not have a C.A.R.B. approval number.

From experience. Considering the fact that they cannot do much with the computer due to OBDII OBDIII restrictions, they pretty much do **** for you. How can you be certain that they even did something to the computer without extensive testing, or at least a couple of dyno pulls? When I got my celica done by them during my less experienced years of car enthusiasm, I noticed that the upgrade made no difference. I felt like I paid 400 bucks for 2 decals, one that seals the ecu which voids their service and warranties, and another they send so you stick on your car. They can't even increase the rev range if you ask them to. Basically, if you're going to do computer work to your car, get something that you can tune without having to send it to jet. Trust me, JET SUX!!

If you want to have control of your air/fuel and ignition, but don't want to spend money on a fuly programmable ecu like motec or haltech, plus pay for a tech guy to do the datalogging, or take the time to learn how to work it yourself, I'd suggest a SAFC and MSD 6BTM combination. The SAFC, as most of you know, works as a piggy back between the MAF and your ECU, and the MSD 6BTM, well, i know you guys are familiar with these parts. You might spend a couple of extra hundred bucks acquiring these 2 units, but it will be worth it as you perform light mods to your car.

Now, there are some plug n' play units out there. Blitz, Rallytech, link (although fully programmable), are a few examples of some plug and play units, yet I don't think they are available for the US Lancer. My suggestion is wait for as long as possible before choosing JET. Consider all the other options before JET. Anything else you choose even if more expensive will pay off down the road, and will always have a re-sale value.

Wow, Lee. It's been a while. Been lurking? Welcome back.

Another option for fully programmable ECU is the AEM EMS which apparently is FINALLY shipping for the Lancer. Initially expensive yes, but in the long run fully programmable is probably your best choice.

EDIT: Depending upon what you wanna do with the car in the end of course. If you're gonna go I/H/E and stop then a fully programmable ECU is clear overkill. If You're running medium to high boost levels then you're probably going to want as powerful a computer as you can afford.

Hey brother, nice to hear from you again. Been hibernating mostly, looking to upgrade my car but undecided on what to invest. Been changing the looks abit on it, and will post pics as soon as I'm done. Also, I have a new project car I'm working on, which has been been my favorite car ever since ever, an ST205 Celica GT4. Finally decided to get one from Japan, and will be on the road soon. Car will be up for sale at the end of the summer, well, depending wether or not I get attached to it.

By the way peoples, Hobie is completly right (obviously). If you're going for the basic stuff, don't even bother with the ecu because it really won't matter much at this stage. Once you get that turbo in with minimal boost, or a nos setup with a 50/80 shot, then consider a SAFC and a better fuel pump. With a simple SAFC or similar product, you can really tune your car to take advantage of the turbo and/or nos you'll be injecting on the car.

Consider this scenario from Jet. Lets say you send out your ecu to JET with a check for 400 bucks. One day later, the ecu comes back to your door, with a receipt and the little jet stickers attached to the ecu. You've sent instructions stating all the upgrades you have done to the car, and exactly what you want the rpm limit to be at, and let them figure out the fuel and ignition curves for you (well, lets say they'll take a guess). You stick it back on the car, only to notice that you're still reving at the same factory rpm limit, with no noticeable difference at WOT (obviously). You call them asking why you cant rev any higher even though you have specifically asked for such alteration only to hear the lame as excuse that such changes can't be done. What next? Do you expect them to give you back the money? I suggest reading all the FAQs and purchase policies before doing so.

Thanx for all the info guys! I was wondering, though, all I plan on upgrading is t/b, sri, tst pipe & axle back, I was thinking the ecu upgrade would give some more h/p with those upgrades. What do you guys think?

Why not ask OZbot about this......he installed a turbo kit and this thing fried his engine. So I would think if you were planning to go the F/I route this would not be a wise investment. But if not ask him how he liked it.
