Thanks Kontra (owner of the sweetest ride on this board that I've seen... I aspire to be like you man :-) )

I do remember exactly what you are talking about... when I was posting that comment their site was down for upgrades... I vaguely remembered that they had soundproofing in it... but wasn't sure what it was....

Looking into it more they use a steel mesh (looks more or less like steel wool) and a felt like material that they pad the body of the muffler with. Combined it does just what Kontra said... prevents the material from degrading and blowing out of the muffler... and the same time keeps them modest in tone.

The exhaust guys I talked to raved about the impressive performance with good sound suppression especially compared to the likes of FlowMaster... and i certainly have to agree!

Do you remember the part numbers for your Resonator and muffler? This custom issue looks like the way to go and if you have sound by next week and I like it, magnaflow and local shop here I come!

I'm out of town and on a crappy crappy connection for now... so I don't feel like putting up with the sorry dial up speed... but I'll post the part numbers by editing this post later... I also may get some preliminary audio up for you by Sunday afternoon/evening!!!

Planning on giving you guys audio of start up, revs, slow drive away, in car, and driveby. Should give you a good idea of the exhaust then!

Peace!
-Steve

FLOWMASTER

FLOWMASTER = SLOWDISASTER

All of there mufflers are packed with fiberglass...you might as well just put a hollow muffler in your car, cause they will only be good for a month, unless you like buying a new muffler all the time. I cant stand the sound of a Flowmaster, it's so distinct and so horrible...sorry, just my opinion on those type of things.

First Sound Clips

By Wednesday I'll have a decent in car, drive by, acceleration, and rev sequence set of clips for you guys... in the meantime I did get some kind of ok sound clips. (Recorded with a digital camera.. not a video camera... so kinda low sound quality and pitch representation)

The pitch of the exhaust really freakin low... it hits the tuned port frequency on my stereo system which is 38Hz... so if you listen to this on computer speakers it may sound quite different then it really does...

I'm open to criticism and "rice" comments... but my idea of "ricey" isn't anything like what this sounds like... so hopefully I'm not wrong... but give me your input regardless.

I'd hold making a final judgement on what you think it sounds like until after Wednesday (the 2nd) when I should have the better sound clips up for you that are at a much better fidelity.

Also keep in mind when you listen to these the relative volume between the sound of the starter... and then the exhaust...

From six feet away and 12" off the ground... the exhaust sounds like:

And

yeah, that does it for me.. I'll be going for an estimate this week :P That sound was nice, deep and perfect for what I'm looking for. I assume that those recordings are from outside the car? Can you get one inside?

I'll have some inside driving recordings within a couple of days... the sound in the car under hard acceleration is hard to distinguish from the air intake... overall it makes the car sound pretty sweet when you drive it hard... but yeah.. I'll have more audio and/or video in a couple of days for you.

Part Numbers for you guys:

4" x14" resonator M-10415

4"x9"x18" muffler M-11255

All with 2.25" piping.

I mentioned a good place to buy the parts further up in the thread.

Later!

Steve

Depending upon where you live it may never happen. Most places don't really have dB laws so long as you're not "disturbing the peace". The only one I know of for certain is CA. Maybe there are some local govt's with ordinances, but they sure ain't near me.

Loud was the last thing in the world I wanted... no offense to you but more often than not it is some little punk high school kid running around with a POS car with a loud *** exhaust on his car. LOL... There are two guys that work at the drive through sub sandwich place that abutts my apartment building with exhaust like that and I'm just waiting to go out and strangle them every damn time they wake me up at like 2 in the morning with their cars (one is a couple year old Nissan Sentra SE, and the other a half rusted out Civic CRX)

So yeah.. the whole point of this exhaust was performance with good sound suppression... and it was achieved... Some like it loud... some like it quiet :-).

Later!
