Question Intake Gremlin

Well i finnally got my long overdue intake kit in. lol
just went down to auto zone, got a MAF adapter and a filter. $60.40 in total

anywayz, i managed to get the stock intake box off, despiste the unruely bolts. hookd up the adapter, and filter. plugged the sensor back in, hooked up the battery and....................stutter stutter.....dead....

it was insane, the car revved, then slowly sputtered and died. so i tried driving it around the block, checking incase the ECU needed to adjust. Half way around the block my power steering dies.
I get the car back home,. unhook everything, plug it all back in again...started it up............worked fine.
My car is now running sweet with my new intake. but i have no idea why that happened. Im thinking it was the MAF connection might not have been plugged in all the way so it was confusing the ECU.
the CEL did come on also.
Any other theories? not that it matters cos its running fine, but just out of curisosity.

its seems to be working sweet. although to be honest it sounded nicer with my retarted half an intake mod.
Its the same loudness and sounds good. but with half the box it sounded really deep, it was sweet. i think it because the sound resonated inside the half of the intake box behind the filter. Im gonna rack my brains and try and think of a way to get that deep tone somehow. Im thinking of somehow using half of the stock intake box, and laying it down flat, cutting into it so the filter sits just inside and can still take in air from the top (helpful when i get my hood duct) and im gonna slot the stock intake funnel in there somehow.

I dunno how im gonna do it, but i will figure it out somehow, and when i do, i will share the knowledge.

get your zip ties at the ready! lol

ok i have encountered my first problem.
Well its not really a problem and not much of a big deal. but its enough to bother me., lol

now i have the new intake on whenever the car is just sitting in park. the engine in kinda sputters, really lightly but enough for me to notice.
It drives fine, but its just when its running but not doing anything. You cant notice it with the A/C on.

any ideas?

Man, why so many problems with peoples air intake upgrades? Any damage to the honeycomb for the sensor?

Couldn't tell you what in the world happened to the PS...

nope, not a single scratch on the honeycomb.

i did do that one mod, unscrewing the big plastic screw on the bottom of the MAF. you think i might have unscrewed it to far?

You may have done this but, reset the ecu the way you would with a piggyback ecu, I mean, disconnect the negative cable on your battery for about 15 minutes, then reconnect and start your car and let it idle for 5-10mins then drive your car around for 15-20mins being sure not to rev over say 2500rpms for the first 5mins or so and then dont rev over 3000rpms for the remaining time. This will ensure that your ecu has adapted to the mod as good as possible.

Its possible the thing you did with the screw may be causing you problems at idle, i've noticed that my car, and we have the same car (03 OZ), is pretty sensitive to unmeasured air at idle. I found this out when I had a breather filter on my intake, my car had a pretty bumpy idle, I took it off, pluged the hole and it idled fine.

Question

ok nevermind i have problems again

i got a check engine light, car idle goes up to 2000 when i start the car, then slowly drops back down to normal. and when i turn the car off the intake makes a wierd woosh/choking sound.

I just did an oil change this morning, so im gonna double check the filter incase thats whats causing the CEL

but if not i really need help, i dont wanna have to go to the mechaninc.

if anyone has time and can instant message here is my info. i will be online for another hour. thanks

All this is normal except for the cel. Go to autozone in the morning and get them to check the service engine light for free.

Yep the rev at the beggining and the choking noise is normal. You don't hear the choking noise with a stock box becuase it deadens the sound of the engine stopping. I have heard about unexplained CEls with intakes but that shouldn't happen. Maybe get the code pulled? I think they can do that easily at most places
