Pulley removal help
Pulley removal help
Okay, I am replacing the crank pulley with the RRM one... I have removed all the belts and am now working on removing the pulley but I cannot.... The pulley rotates with whatever force I put into it... And I am using a breaker bar, so I know I can get the pressure needed to remove it, I just cannot get it to stay in one place... I assume I need a pulley removal tool to do this, but is there any way around this?... PLease help so I do not have to spend more $$$ on a tool I will use once...
I ran into the same problem what i did was take out one of the spark plugs and feed some rope into the hole so the piston would stop from going up and down therefore able to stop the engine from cranking over.
Get a friend to sit in the car. Put the car in gear and have them stand on the brakes. That'll keep the engine still. From there, it takes a LOT of force to get the thing off.
Another option, which I saw in an Evo how-to on changing the timing belt - lift the car up, put a breaker bar on the nut and get it as close to horizontal as you can (sticking towards the front of the car). Brace the breaker bar with a jack stand. Disconnect your cam position sensor (so the car won't start), get in the car, and crank it. Should break the nut lose.
I don't recommend that second option (it scares me), but I really did see that in a Vendor's how-to, so it probably works.

Well the friend sitting in a car didnt work, it still rotated... ANd I am a little bit scared to try sticking some rope in... but I may just have to try that out, before I try the jack stand one...
get an air gun... if not you need to get a specialty tool... a lot of places rent them out around here, dont know if they do around your area or not. Air tools however will be your best bet, and YOU will use an air gun more then once if you do your own work on your car.

i heard you can rent tools for free at pepboys or autozone as long as you bring it back. for example if it costs 80 dollars to rent the tool and you bring it back you get your 80 dollars back.
