Hey, I just replaced my Timing belt, Alternator Belt and Power Steering Belt. Ive notice for the past 3 of days when I start my car up in the morning, one of the belts squeal for about 15 secs. Any ideas why this might be? Could some of the belts be to loose/tight? Should I run some water over the belts to see if there is some loose dirt trap? Thanks

 

I had the same problem, my timing belt was to tight

 

Did you replace the belts or did a mechanic, because a loose belt will definately squeel. Washing them with some fresh water can't hurt, and you can try belt dressing, but you should make sure they are on right because it can create some problems if they are not, some serious.

 

Yea, the belts were changed by a mechanic, all 3. The belts didnt squeal until a few days after I left the shop. I had to go back the day after I left the shop for the timing, It was retarded a tooth and they fixed that. So, dunno.

 

Its a pain, but you have to keep going back to them until its right because they should'nt squeal.

 

I heard you can spray some WD-40 on them and it should stop the annoying squealing.

 

slighty OT but since you got the timing belt changed have any of you had a vibration when backing up or starting to move forward

 

Its common knowledge, except on here, that new belts loosen up after a few days. All they have to do is tighten them. Takes like 10mins.

Belt dressing and WD40 is for used car dealers that want to stop the squealing long enough to get you off the lot without fixing it.

 

No, theres none at all. I have a good Idle, it just squeals for about 15 secs when the car is started and continues to idle normal. No vibration when moving forward or backing up.

 

i get no squel though and idle is fine

 

Word up! The tightening -can- be a DIY but I'd just call and make the appt to have the belts tightened. I'm a little surprised they didn't tell you to bring it back some evening or a Saturday when it's a little slow so they can make the adjustment.

BTW- it's not your timing belt because ours has teeth. If THAT starts slipping say bye-bye to your engine
