? about any cam install...

If I were to purchase the RRM or RPW cam, any stage, would I also need to purchase aftermarket cam gear, valve springs, retainers, head bolts, etc. to strengthen the top end of the motor?

Thanks for the help Iam not that familiar with the little stuff in the motor

Steve

You have no idea how hopeless you make some of us here feel.

stage 1: no. adj cam gear won't help with an RRM grind, might help a little with RPW but even Dave admits gain would be minimal.

stage 2+: cam gear and springs, fuel management to get the most out of st 2 and is required for st 3-6. You'll not need to replace retainers or headbolts for any cam install (unless you lose one). Springs have been changed on-head before, I wasn't able to becasue I'm teh suxor. Oh and be sure to not get your intake and exhaust valves mixed up

This should be very low on your list of things to do if your sig is accurate. You should not try to do this on your own if you're asking this kind of question (that is, if you can't find this info on your own then you're screwed when the install goes bad because we won't be there to help you figure out what you did wrong.)
I'd recommend you look at intake side mods (TB, IM, fuel rail, FPR) and start learning a fuel management system (eManage or RRMs piggy with software), then header & DP, then delve into taking your engine apart.

thanks for the info. I was going to have a local shop or my father (who has built about three dirt race cars from the ground up) and I put the cam in and i was just wondering if i needed to buy that stuff to get the most out of the cam

thanks again Alchemist, for the info.

Steve

PS I am more then likely going to go with st 1, maybe 2

As Alchemist said, wait, you won't be pleased with the performance of the cam with just an exhaust and intake.

you'll hate stage 2. A few people have gone the "I'll get a st 2 because I plan to mod the hell out of my car" route and then not only hated the result (no torque and only mild gains way up top, because the supporting mods aren't there) but then they ran out of steam on the other projects and were stuck with a car that didn't run the way they like. build the foundation, then go to cam work. For the same $350 for a shipped stage 1 RPW cam you can:

*G93 Intake Mani: I bought several at $50 may be in the $90 range as they become rarified- better plenum and equal length runners for better torque. If you bore the plenum entry and the runner outlets you get better results.
*underdrive pulley with accessory belts: $100 if you shop eBay, get the belts online and DIY the install
*Bore the TB to 60mm: surely your dad knows some people that can do this for the remaining $160
and these will yield more power than an RPW st 1 (well, for now, once you've built a base then you can really tap what a cam can do for you).

OR
Get the RRM piggy with software (this is about $100 more than the RRM "stage 1" cam and it WILL yield better results right outta the box because it's preprogrammed).

That's the last nickel I have on the subject. Good luck

The package we are doing the most now with the best results is

RPW Stage 1 camshaft and vernier camshaft gear
Greddy emanage to adjust fuel and ignition
Mirage manifold and bored out lancer throttle body to 60mm (Well RPW bores to 60mm anyway)
RPW Race extractors and high flow cat covnerter
2 1/2" press bent exhaust system
Cold air induction kit 2 1/2" diameter piping

THis combo we have found produces teh best results. The manifold provides much better flow, stage 1 camshaft good idle, but vernier camshaft gear allows you to really play with teh cam timing to get the best results in power and torque.

Greddy emanage or haltech interceptor - allows both FUEL and IGNITION adjustment - and in my opinion the only way to tune a car properly if you are doing it to get the best results.

This is what the majority of our customers are doing and getting the best results with.
