Timing Belt over 70k = mishap!

Well my car died about a month ago and i just finally got it back. Turns out the timing belt broke and bent 12 valves. It cost me $2100 for everything to get fixed including all new belts. I deffinatley recoomend getting that thing changed at 60k as it should onyl cost a few hundred. But anyhow I bit the bullet and the car is back up and running greta except for a power stearing pump leak that i need to take back to get fixed. But anyway happy boosting

That's a painful lesson to have to learn. I've never had one break because I let it go too long, but I did have one break 10k miles too early. Bent a bunch of valves, broke two exhaust valves, trashed head, holed #2 piston, dinged up the #2 cylinder wall. Pretty much killed that car for me.

Could have been worse and trashed all the pistons.

Just be glad the lancers are SOHC. I had a dsm prior to my lancer with the 4G63 DOHC. I had a small fender bender and my belt snapped 2 days later cuz where he hit me cracked the timing cover causing a little piece to jump into a sprocket 2 days later. Bent all 16 valves, trashed the head, scored the tops of the pistons, just an absolute mess, i was lucky because since it was "caused by the accident" that guy's insurance covered it all since he was at fault. But still, broken timing belts are just an unnecessary evil. You would think car manufacturers would have adapted metal TB's or something less prone to breakage after 60k long ago.

Thus one reason Nissans are somewhat superior... Metal timing chains... They can be loud and a pain in the neck if it needs work though!

Like the timing chain in my '69 Camaro?

Obviously the manufacturers consider the rubber ones an "upgrade" from the old days.

I always wonder...when a timing belt snaps there's plenty of damage to the head of the engine and possibly the pistons. Why not just buy a new engine and slap it in the place of the old one? Wouldn't it be cheaper?

From $300 to $700 depends how many miles and where do you get if from. Usually $500 is enough to get a decent bang for a buck and slapping it in is pretty easy.
