Breaking in new engine?
I changed my oil at 3000km and at 6000km and then every 6000km after that. From what I saw even when I took it in at 2950 it still looked good and clean.
as for my break in i didnt go easy but I didnt bag the ***t out of it either, i think 5000 was my ceiling and I have hit rev limiter once racing a bike and not paying attention at about 1900 km.

RPM is only half the equation, load is the other thing you should keep an eye on.
I have had 3 cars in my house hold over the past 15 years. A 1992 honda Accord 450,000+km 2001 Mazda protege 230,000 and a 88 chevy corsica 400,000 original engines not burning oil, and for the chevy lol thats saying alot.
But i have the habit of never allowing my car to tackle up hill situations under a lower RPM, ESPECIALLY with your A/C on. you have no idea how much you stress your engine with your AC on and driving up a hill.
always use the approprate gear for the task.
your car will live for ever, well your engine any way.
I also use synthetic, and for the past 2 years using Mobil Extended performance and changing my oil every 20,000km and hp filter every 10,000.
Lol before you look shocked, its important to understand how oil works and how it breaks down. Mobil's Extended performance oil is the best grade stuff around and = to 20,000 vs. regular changes of your cars manufacturer, * well in most situations

On my new Lancer ('03 mind you) I did a change at 500, 1500, 3000, then every 3000 after that. If you ever do a complete motor tear-down and rebuild it/ bore it/hone it/ new bearings/etc etc...I'd add a 50 mile step and a 150 mile step at the beginning of that sequence.
Isn't that just a big waste of money?
@500? That early? Isn't there 'special' oil in your car when it comes from the factory?
mitsu manual does indicate a break-in period for the first 300 miles, perhaps most would think this is somewhat on the short end... I broke it in using diferent and elavating RPM periods (manual gear box) first 300 miles shifting @ aprox 2500-2600RPM then 300-600 shifting up to 2800-3000 RPM then 600-1000 more around +-3000 and over 1000 gradually opened all gears towards the red zone!
Then again there are those who take a trip just to break-in the engine in which case (have done with other cars in the past) since you're probably in 5th or 6th gear most of the time you just make sure no to keep constant speed and RPM range but to vary between 2600-3100 depending on mileage point

Personally, I did an oil change at 2600 miles. Partly to be safe and partly because I wanted clean oil for the nearly 2k miles I put on the car going to North Carolina.
Some folks worry that metal particles from the car's initial break-in will get into the oil. Hence the early change. It might cost a lot in oil, but if it makes the motor last longer, isn't it worth it?
Agree-

i'll keep it on the normal maintainance schedule - every 7500 (I do 90% highway driving)
My .02:
Don't baby it, but don't beat on it too badly. Go 3/4 throttle and take it to 1000rpm before redline. Then as the miles add on, progressively give it more throttle and more RPM.
You should hear my oil change schedule on a new motor.
Granted, these are for the new forged engines that I hand build (rather than an OEM block). But what I do is:
-Put cheap oil in the motor. Start it for the first time. Let it idle for 20 mins. Change oil and filter.
-Drive ~100 miles. Change oil.
-@ 500 miles, change it again.
-@ 1000-1500 miles, change it again, and continue on your regular oil schedule from there.
