I mean the VW Gulf GTI Diesel gets MPG's that are in the high 60's...and it has POWER too! Yet here in the states we're stuck with MPG's in the 40's to low 50's and it's on cars that feel like they're powered by 4 harnessed field mice.
I know there's the Tesla too, but that's not exactly an affordable alternative for most people.
most diesel engines will not run on the CRAP NA diesel. Toyota was going to bring the Hilux engines to NA in both the Tundra and Tacoma but they had to tone back the engines so much that they decided against it. Look at the power difference in a TDI jetta from NA and one from Europe, 2008 TDI has 103 hp and 184 ft/lbs while the 2008 NA TDI has 100 HP and 177 Ft/Lbs (taken off www.vw.co.uk and www.vw.ca)

Euro diesel>NA diesel
