Hey Rock,

I imagine you'll be watching this thread closely, so I'm asking this question here. On your website, it says that the pully is made from Aircraft-Grade aluminum. Usually when people say aircraft grade aluminum, they are refering to 2000-series grade of aluminum which is an alloy derived from aluminum and copper. within the 2000-series, there are many different designations of alloys.I was wondering if you know, or if you could contact your machinist and find out, the specific grade of aluminum being used?

The reason I ask is, I'm a machinist and I'm curious to see what type of alluminum alloy was actually used. The copper content can play a big role as to how the part will react to different stresses...ie, waer on the shaft from the main seal. I'm going to be looking into this problem, seeing how I also have the pully installed and I really dont want to run into the same problem as the original poster.

Thanks.

THe design an material content is right cause it is the same as the 100s or 1000s if you count our other model pulleys. Nothing to do or say about it except send it back to me to get it inspected. Call in. THe thread is not the place to guess what casued the leak. We would all be guessing. Send it back include a note with your contact info.

Hey man, I understand.

Im not saying I have the same problem, but I will be removing my pully tomorow to check it out. I was asking becuase alot of people I talked to said there should really be a steel sleeve around the shaft so the main seal wouldnt wear the shaft, and eventually leak. I was thinking about fabricating a steel sleeve to go around the shaft in order to make sure this doesnt happen. Thats the main reason I wanted to know the grade of aluminum... It would help becuase then I would know the best cylindrcal lock-tite to use when pressing the sleeve onto the aluminum shaft.

I will difinitlly write back with my findings (with pics) of my pully. If this was a freak thing, then that should clear things up some.

I steel sleeve is not needed. We researched it for a long time before we made the pulley for this car to make sure. If there is nothing wrong, do not pull it off. THis is surely a freak thing based on number of pulleys out there.

this groove issue seems to be native to the 4b11. we pulled the stock pulley off our test car with 4,000 miles and found the same groove. because this is a new motor mitsu probably dosent realize the engine has this main seal problem. we will inform mitsu of the problem. no matter which pulley u have stock or not there is going to be a leak issue over time. we will discuss the options with our CNC guy for further pullies but no need to change it yet since there is only one reported case of a leaky seal.

I guess its not a freak thing after all.. especially if it did it to the stock, steel pulley.

I think Ill be taking off my RRM pulley before it gets totally destroyed by the seal... and wait for Mitsu to recall it or something.

I thought i saw a TSB that was posted with something about an oil seal. I don't know if this could be for this type of issue. "Revised Valve Stem and or Crankshaft Oil Seal Service" is the name of the TSB that is posted in the Troubleshooting section. I'm a noob when it comes to deep engine work, but this sounded somewhat close when I thought about it. Just thought I'd menion it.

I guess it was a good idea to put all the TSBs up on the boards.

Interesting. I've had my car for about 8 months. I just took off the stock pulley and I saw the groove along with a little bit of oil. I'll be heading to the dealership in the morning about this.
