Carb Cert Parts

Ok...this is for all you who like me are unlucky to live in a start that requires Smog testing and Carb legal parts. Now so far I have the RRM exaust along with the RMR intake as well as small other mods. Now I am looking to head twards my next performance mod but it is limited to keeping my car Smog legal.

So...does anyone make a Carb cert legal header?
I know they make them for some heigher performance cars as well as trucks.

If not...what can i do to help performance with out spending thousands on a turbo kit?

I know this will be usefull for others so post what you got and remember...Mods keeping within Smog legal.

There will never be a CARB legal header since well, you'd be removing that oh so lovely 1st quick light cat.

No, you won't pass smog with the headers........If you take off the pre-cat or post-cat if you will, your actual smog test will pass. What you don't pass is the visual exam. Yes, not only do they put your car on the dyno and put a test meter up your exhaust pipe, they also visually go around the car and under it, looking for tampered items. This is for the state referree only though......But there are always ways around this. Like after you got cited for illegal emissions, they will give you 30 days to take it to the state referree. In that 30 days, just swap back to your stock and then take it there.

I've done this smog thing a million times thats how I know.......

is there a way to move the first cat (or all the cats) further down the line, allowing the header to be installed and still have the cats after it? Or better yet, will they offer a cat that combines the functions of both? I ask that question because they recently allowed such a mod in my class of autocross, but I don't know if such a thing exists.

That wouldn't be a bad idea. Make a 4-1 style header that relocates the first quick light cat closer to the second. In theory possible but I'd wonder how close that is to crossing the line as to where mandates say you can not remove/replace cats unless they are malfunctioning. Dah...CARB.

You cannot move or otherwise modify the cat even if your relocate it.

Troie, you can go turbo in a few months as I am getting RRM's turbo kit CARB Certified.

You can get the throttle body now as if looks stock and wont affect emissions much.

I also know that RRM is working on getting their intake certified (I am doing that also).

You can look into the RRM ECU as that will not affect anything either (but performance)

I have asked about that very question regaurding the 2 cats...here is what the local Gear head told me.With cars that have 2 cats the first needs to be as close to where the air flows out of the motor as posible so it can read the coldest air from the motor. As well as the second cat is further downso the o2 censor can read and tell the diff.so unless someone comes out with a CARB legal cooled inline cat...no go.
He told me this after i was woundering if i could simply get a spare second cat from someone who has a testpipe and simply mount the two inline in the exaust piping(sounded like it made since to me)
Now...the CARB legal turbo is sounding really good in my brain...by the time it comes out i may be able to save enough to get it.
Vince...I would like to call first dibs as a test (Automatic)Lancer for it but somehow i allready have the feeling you have your fingers into it allready.
Thanks though...you just saved me a email to RRM
