4g94s have interference heads. A friend of mine bent several valves when his timing belt failed.

My belt slipped and damaged all the exhaust valves (4G9x).
I was told if you're lucky enough to where the valves stop, you won't need to replace any bent valves.

^^ ya.. interfearance heads are natorious for actually bending more valves from valves getting stuck then the timing belt breaking, jsut because most non-idiot people know that it has to be changed. but if the belt breaks on our vehicle your more then likely going to hit a valve, but you can get lucky. my buddies snapped on the highway, no damage, just a new belt..

yes, thanks for the information, I also called my local mitsubishi and the service department also confirmed it is an interference motor... BTW my timing belt stripped a few teeth off with only 109,800 miles, im pretty sure the belts never been replace before, anyways Ive already started pulling the motor , and Ive also got another motor on the way it should be here sometime next week, and ill probably have the new one dropped in , in a few weeks time... now the hunt begins on finding a clutch kit, and slave cylinder and a few other items... ( oh yeah the motor I got coming is out of a wrecked 06 lancer es with 2000 miles, I ran a vin check on the car that its coming out of and it comes up as pretty much totaled a month of so off the dealer lot)

WOW.. thats awsome.. bascialyl brand new motor for you.. thats great..

i got a full swap out of a junker also, only costing me 300.. including everything..
and timeing belts need to be swapped every 60k miles on our cars if i remember reading out dealer info properly... (it was 60 or 90. but i do it every 60 to be safe)

I got the motor out today and it is a confirmed kill, the motor has bent valves on 2 of the cylinders ... Took all of about 5 hours to pull it out...

I was driving the other day, car turned on light and engine shut down. The shop says its a timing belt light. He told me that valves may have bent. I'm having them just do the timing cover/waterpump/etc. kit and going to take it home to check the valves, would I be able to diagnose bent valves on the drive back home(170 miles) or do I have to take it apart?

If its even remotely possible that you bent even one valve when the timing belt snapped (which I would bet you did since its extremely common when losing a timing belt) I wouldn't even think of attempting to try and drive your car home just to test it there. At this point it may be just a bent valve or 2, but if you attempt to drive it home after having a shop fix everything else, you could cause way more damage and basically you'd be throwing that money you just spent out the window. I would bet the shop would say the same thing I'm telling you. Just have the shop look into it and fix it....If you wanna do it yourself. Have them fix what you just mentioned and then have it towed to your place so you can look at it then.

The problem witht hat is "my place" is 170 miles away. Can't do serious engine work at my apt complex where I'm staying now. Will I even be able to tell if valves are bent without taking alot of the engine parts out, is my question.
