New intake mod. Gimmic or Innovation?

just stumbled across this from another thread link.

http://www.designengineering.com/cry...ir_intake.html

i had an idea similar to this, and they seemed to have really made a practical application. the theory of course is by supercooling the incoming air, it becomes more dense and more oxygen rich, and therefore... more power.

anybody have any thoughts, experience with this?

if it works, then this will definitely be a possibility for my next NA upgrade.

No gimmick, Ford is working with it for the next Ford Lightning. The theory is yes, super-cooling the air will create a denser charge and therefore more power. The idea was tested in the past, but because at the time most refrigorants were R-134 based (I think thats the number), they would combust in the engine as create some very toxic emissions. Now, since there are many enviroment friendly refrigorants, the idea is more feasible. I dont know how much power can be had, but I read the Ford Lightning prototype gained about 50 hp.

the cool thing about this system, is it uses C02 for cooling, which can be refilled at a VERY affordable cost. the spray itself never enters the intake chamber, rather it sprays on a specially designed section that becomes supercooled.

i'm interested to see some number associated with this system. if was able to put out another 10-15 hp for under 500 dollars, it might be well worth the investment.

Yea, I didnt really look at your link, if its CO2 that would be cool for cost. I dont know how cool it could get the air if its just indirectly cooling the intake charge....

http://www.mini2.com/forum/showthread.php?t=35760

they have a whole thread with some guy who installed this thing in his mini and swears by it. i think it is best understood (in power difference) like this:

ever drive your car on a crisp cool morning? feels like a new engine doesn't it? that's how this system will make your car feel. it doesn't really do anything to GAIN horsepower from your system, rather it STOPS LOSSES so that your system can reach its potential despite undesirable weather (which i often have here in florida).

now i'm just wondering how well that system would fit on my aem cai, or if i'd have to get some custom piping done...
EDIT: after looking more closely at the system, it look like i'd have to drill some holes in the aem intake and plave this piece in. doesn't look that difficult really.

the more i think about it, how pimp would this setup be:

cryo2 supercooled intake
intake temp meter
a/f ratio meter

i really hope i get some money soon, so i can really start tuning my car!

I have a buddy that has something simular to that in his supra. The co2 or nos whichever one shoots on his intercooler and freezes it giving him like 20hp Im guessing. I think it could be a good investment. I wouldn't like the idea of spraying CO2 into the intake(sounds counter-productive), but then again I don't know exactly how it works. If it works how I think it does...I think it is a cool-*** idea

some intercoolers are sprayed with co2 or n2o or even water (like the evo) to help reduce the temperature even more. and in this system, the co2 never enters the air in the intake. see the little bulb in the picture above? i believe co2 is sprayed into that sealed unit, which is located inside your intake. the metal becomes supercooled, while the co2 exits outside your intake.

with that being said, i too think its a "cool-*** idea".

Well there is something esle added to my list of goodies I'm about to buy. its cheep for what it is, really. I have a dyno chart from a turboed supra and the hp gains are freaky. There was a 43 hp gain from just spraying the intercooler down with NoS...Thats badass.

yep yep! i figure on a tuned lancer, you'll be able to get at least 10-15 hp from it, at the push of a button (which to me is the cool part, no pun intended), maybe more.

somebody with some money should buy the intercooler kit and slap it on their evo. i'd bet you'd see some SERIOUS gains there.

See in about a week or two I am going to go crazy with rrm and buy the intercooled turbo kit and ecu...I think this would be kick *** if you ask me, I just don't know if it is really safe or not...I mean I'm already bumping the hp up to 200+ and I just want to be on the safe side you know. What do you think?

You should just tape ice to your intercooler.
