Cai?

Hi, I'm new to the form, and I am also new to owning a lancer. I wanted to know what your opinions where on CAI brands (which are the best in terms of quality and price)? Also I noticed my engine service need light and it stalls out in first, I ran a OBD and got back code: PO171 System too lean (bank 1). I understands that this code has something to do with the MAF, and i was told because my car has a modded exhaust I need to put in a non-stock intake in order create an equilibrium between the input and output to fix both problems, is this correct? help please thanx!

Have you tried resetting your car's computer?

Unplug your battery for about 15min, also i hear pumping your brake a few times will speed up this process. Then reconnect your battery, when you first crank it up the engine will rev up pretty high then drop back down. This lets you know it reset. Then let your car idle for 15min, then drive lightly for 15min, these 2 steps are key. This way the computer relearns how to run properly, with your mods.

I only have a CAI and its almost a necessity every time my computer resets. If I don't the car doesn't idle right or run as smooth as it should. After it relearns everything, it should run normally.

It does not matter which brand you go with. They all preform the same. Maybe 1-2 hp gains at the most. Short ram will pretty much give you the same results.

Just because you have an exhaust doesn't mean you need an intake. Whoever told you that is why your car threw the "check engine" light is wrong.

Call your nearest Mitsu dealer and talk to someone in the service dept about that code. They might tell you what it means without having to drive up there.

I just googled your code.
I'd like to see a picture of your engine bay(including intake box, intake tube, intake manifold and side of the valve cover; all that in the same picture)

And a list of mods would be helpful too. You got exhaust... anything else?

Only the exhaust is modded, everything thing else is stock.
Here are some photos, sorry one of them kind of came out bad...

engine bay 2:http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...ker875/110.jpg
exhaust: http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...5/S7300156.jpg

I can get closer photos if that's helpful?
P.S. How hard is it to install a CAI? What parts of the car have to be removed?

Yeah, I kind of guessed that I was just wondering if there was any merit to what he was saying. However I am still intend to get a CAI sometime in the near future.
Possible Solutions - In the vast majority of cases, simply cleaning the MAF sensor does the trick. Consult your service manual for it's location if you need help. I find it's best to take it off and spray it with electronics cleaner or brake cleaner. Make sure you are careful not to damage the MAF sensor, and make sure it's dry before reinstalling.

(Can someone please tell/show me how to do this, I've been trying to figure it out for like the last week, I've seen some instructions but all are different car which is great but no completely helpful...) Thanx!

I've been looking for repair manuals for the lancer but unfortuantly there are none. dunno why but cant find any. not even haynes has one. try goin to a pepboys or autozone and ask sum1 if they know how to clean one. i know the MAF sensor is behind the air box. heres installation instruction for the aem intake. shows pics where the maf sensor is: http://www.aempower.com/images/produ...s%2021-434.pdf

whats the mileage? you could have a ignition issue. check plugs condition and maybe consider a new set of coil packs and wires.
