Unhappy engine replacement for 02 oz.

im going to start off by saying that i know very little about engines and im afraid im going to be financialy raped by the dealer, my car is already in the shop cause i couldnt get it running, they told me today that i bent my valves and maybe put a hole in my piston? they told me i need a new motor. which im sure theyd be willing to sell me for a **** ton of money. anyways if thats the case what motors could i get that will be inexpensive to buy and install but still give me a little boost in HP. and or would it be cheaper and less of a hassle to fix the engine thats in it? it had about 137k mi on it.

If you are willing to search and have patience you can save a ton of money. You should be able to find a gaurenteed runner from a salvage yard for around $500. They may want your engine for a core but not like its doing you any good anyways.

As far as your question to the amount of hassle and expense to fix your current engine. Well that depends on the actual extend of the damage. I assume the timing belt broke on this particular engine correct? I haven seen many timing belts break and have yet to see a damaged piston, (although not impossible for sure) usually just bent valves. Also since you have it in a shop I can assume your mechanical knowledge is probably basic which means paying someone else to determined the extent of the damage and repairing it. My opinion would be to get another engine and replace if your unable to determine the problem yourself as thats where the big $$$ can come in to play.
